Phase field simulation of dendritic microstructure in additively manufactured titanium alloy [PDF]
Additive manufacturing (AM) processes for metals, such as selective laser sintering and electron beam melting, involve rapid solidification process. The microstructure of the fabricated material and its properties strongly depend on the solidification ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Strong magnetic field effect on the nucleation of a highly undercooled Co-Sn melt
High magnetic field is a powerful tool to tune the microstructure and improve the properties of materials. In this report, the nucleation behavior of undercooled Co76Sn24 near eutectic alloy under strong homogeneous and gradient magnetic fields have been

Studies of convection in a solidifying binary mixture at reduced gravity [PDF]
A great deal of interest was generated recently in the possibility of producing new materials in the reduced gravity environment provided during the forthcoming missions of Spacelab.

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

In this work, different transformed β matrix was obtained in Ti–5Al–7.5 V alloy. The alloy with equiaxed αp phase and transformed β matrix containing α′ martensite and β phase exhibits good combination of strength and plasticity, as well as a high work ...

The role of gravity on macrosegregation in alloys [PDF]
During dendritic solidification liquid flow is induced both by buoyancy forces and solidification shrinkage. There is strong evidence that the major reason for the liquid flow is the former, i.e., thermosolutal convection. In the microgravity environment,

Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...
