Neurochemical Mechanisms in Soman-induced Seizures
Journal of Applied Toxicology, 1997This study examined brain regional neurotransmitter level changes as a function of seizure duration following soman intoxication. Rats, implanted with cortical electrodes and pretreated with HI-6, received a convulsant dose of soman. At selected times after seizure onset the EEG recording electrodes were removed and the animal was killed.

Pathophysiology of Soman intoxication in primates
Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 1986Adult baboons were monitored during intravenous infusion of Soman (1,2,2-trimethylpropyl ester, phosphonofluoridate). Three groups of animals were studied. Two groups were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (initial dose, 20 mg/kg), instrumented for measurement of systemic blood pressure (BP), pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output (CO), ECG ...

Soman-induced convulsions: The neuropathology revisited
Toxicology, 2005The organophosphorus compound soman, an irreversible inhibitor of cholinesterases, produces seizure activity and related brain damage. Studies using various biochemical markers of programmed cell death (PCD) suggested that soman-induced cell damage in the brain was apoptotic rather than necrotic.

Distribution of 3H-soman in mice
Archives of Toxicology, 19853H-soman (specific activity 10 Ci/mMol), a potent irreversible cholinesterase inhibitor, was administered IV to mice in a dose of one LD-50, which corresponds to 0.25 mCi/mouse. Animals were sacrificed at 5 min, 2 h and 24 h, and whole body autoradiography was performed.

Pharmacological modulation of soman-induced seizures
Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 1993Anticholinergics, benzodiazepines and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists have been shown to modulate the expression of nerve agent-induced seizures. This study examined whether the anticonvulsant actions of these drugs varied depending on the duration of prior seizure activity. Rats implanted with electrodes to record electroencephalographic (EEG)

A method for generating toxic vapors of soman: Toxicity of soman by inhalation in rats
Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 1985A method for administration of highly toxic chemicals by inhalation was developed. The model has three features of special interest: (1) a diffusion cell for producing a constant gas concentration, if necessary for several hours and days, (2) a small rapidly equilibrated inhalation chamber (1100 ml), and (3) complete isolation of the toxic chemicals ...

The combined effects of physostigmine and procyclidine (antagonizing muscarinic, nicotinic, and NMDA receptors) were tested against various doses of soman. Physostigmine (0.1 mg/kg) in combination with procyclidine doses of 1, 3, or 6 mg/kg effectively prevented the development of convulsions and hippocampally monitored seizures when the doses of soman

Cardiomyopathy in Soman and Sarin intoxicated rats
Toxicology Letters, 1987Rats surviving various single dose of the organophosphorus anticholinesterase nerve agents Soman and Sarin were examined by light microscopy at intervals up to 35 days post-exposure. Brain lesions, identical to those that have been reported elsewhere were present, as well as a previously unreported finding associated with Soman or Sarin intoxication ...
