Sexually size dimorphic brains and song complexity in passerine birds
Neural correlates of bird song involve the volume of particular song nuclei in the brain that govern song development, production, and perception. Intra- and interspecific variation in the volume of these song nuclei are associated with overall brain ...

Seasonal changes in patterns of gene expression in avian song control brain regions [PDF]
Photoperiod and hormonal cues drive dramatic seasonal changes in structure and function of the avian song control system. Little is known, however, about the patterns of gene expression associated with seasonal changes.

The evolution of song in female birds in Europe
Bird song is usually regarded as an attribute of males. However, in some species, females may also produce songs even with comparable complexity to that of males. It has been suggested that female song may evolve due to similar selection pressures acting

Age-dependent health status and song characteristics in the barn swallow
Bird song has been hypothesized to evolve, partly, to signal health status of males, and song features should therefore correlate with parasite load. Immune function, parasitism, and secondary sexual characters can, however, differ between age classes ...

Sexual selection on song and cuticular hydrocarbons in two distinct populations of Drosophila montana [PDF]
Sexual selection has the potential to contribute to population divergence and speciation. Most studies of sexual selection in Drosophila have concentrated on a single signaling modality, usually either courtship song or cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Oxygenation through oral Ox66 in a two-hit rodent model of respiratory distress
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complication of pulmonary disease that produces life-threatening hypoxaemia. Despite ventilation and hyperoxic therapies, undetected hypoxia can manifest in capillary beds leading to multi-organ failure ...
