The source rupture process of the Great Banda Sea earthquake of November 4, 1963 [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1987
Abstract The Banda Sea earthquake of November 4, 1963 is one of the largest ( M w = 8.3) intraplate events. It involved oblique thrusting at an intermediate depth within the subducted lithosphere near the abrupt bend in the southeastern Banda arc (6.86° S, 129.58° E). To better understand the tectonic significance of this earthquake, the detailed

open access: yesDizhen xuebao, 2023

open access: yesDizhen xuebao, 2023

The rupture process of the source of the 2016 Ecuador earthquake (Mw 7.8)

open access: yesRevista de Investigación de Física, 2020
The 2016 Ecuador earthquake (Mw 7.8), is part of the sequence of large earthquakes in Ecuador and Colombia: 1906 (8.4 to 8.8 Mw), 1942 (Mw 7.8), 1958 (Mw 7.7), 1979 (Mw 8.2), all these events with a focal mechanism of the thrust fault type. In this research, we have obtain the seismic source distribution (indicating the presence of 2 main asperities ...

The Source Characteristics of the Mw6.4, 2016 Meinong Taiwan Earthquake from Teleseismic Data Using the Hybrid Homomorphic Deconvolution Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
The kinematic source rupture process of the 2016 Meinong earthquake (Mw = 6.4) in Taiwan was derived from apparent source time functions retrieved from teleseismic S-waves by using a refined homomorphic deconvolution method.

Irregular rupture propagation and geometric fault complexities during the 2010 Mw 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The 2010 M W 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah, Mexico, earthquake ruptured multiple faults with different faulting mechanisms. Resolving the earthquake rupture process and its relation to the geometric fault complexities is critical to our understanding of the ...

Prevalence of asymmetrical rupture in small earthquakes and its effect on the estimation of stress drop: a systematic investigation in inland Japan

open access: yesGeoscience Letters, 2019
Stress drops of small earthquakes have been estimated under the assumption that the rupture propagates symmetrically within a circular fault. However, recent studies have observed directivity effects on seismic waves even for small earthquakes.

Linearized waveform inversion of local and near-regional events for source mechanism and rupturing processes [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1994
SUMMARY We have developed an algorithm which can, given an initial trial solution, determine simultaneously earthquake-source mechanism, hypocentre and source-time function from the inversion of broad-band waveform data of local and near-regional events (epicentral distances less than loo). The forward modelling of the seismic ground motion is computed

Sensitivity of the second seismic moments resolution to determine the fault parameters of moderate earthquakes

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2023
Second-degree seismic moments provide a simple description of the spatiotemporal extent of the earthquake source. Finite source attributes such as rupture length, width, duration, velocity, and propagation direction can be estimated by computing second ...
