Earthquake early warning would be improved if the final size of an ongoing earthquake could be predicted early in the rupture process. Previous research relies largely on parameters derived from seismic waveforms, resulting in widely varied estimates of ...

Earthquake source parameters in Zagros region (Iran) from the time-evolutive P-wave displacement
The rupture process of the recent moderate-to-large earthquakes in the Zagros area along the Iran plateau is investigated by analysing the strong motion data provided by the Iranian Building and Housing Research Centre (BHRC).

The 2021 M w 7.1 and 2022 M w 7.4 Fukushima-oki earthquakes ruptured adjacent regions in the subducting slab, which gave us a good opportunity to better understand the rupture process of an intraslab earthquake and the fault system in a subducting slab ...

Rupture process and near‐source shaking of the 1965 Seattle‐Tacoma and 2001 Nisqually, intraslab earthquakes [PDF]
We inverted teleseismic data for the 1965 Seattle‐Tacoma earthquake slip and rake. The earthquake had 2 asperities of 12 and 16 km2 near the hypocenter with average slip of 2 and 2.8 m respectively (Mo = 9.4 × 1025 dyne‐cm; Mw = 6.6). We also inverted strong‐motion and teleseismic data for the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.

The Mw8.4 Illapel earthquake occurred on 16 September was the largest global event in 2015. This earthquake was not unexpected because the hypocenter was located in a seismic gap of the Peru‐Chile subduction zone. However, the source model derived from 3‐

Irregular rupture process of the 2022 Taitung, Taiwan, earthquake sequence
In September 2022, two destructive earthquakes of moment magnitude (M w) 6.6 (foreshock) and 7.1 (mainshock) occurred in Taitung County, south-eastern Taiwan.

The 2016 Menyuan Earthquake: The Largest Self‐Arrested Crustal Earthquake Ever Observed
The 2016 Mw 5.9 Menyuan earthquake occurred near the Haiyuan fault system in the northeastern Tibetan plateau. Although some kinematic properties of this event have been investigated, more dynamic properties still need to be clarified.

Estimating the rupture process of a quake constrains the tectonic setting of its source region. In terrestrial seismology, the rupture process can be described with a classical ω2 model.

Rupture mode preferences of crustal earthquakes in Japan
Rupture propagation is controlled by the energy balance between the energy release rate and fracture energy, which varies according to the rupture mode.
