Firmness at harvest impacts postharvest fruit softening and internal browning development in mechanically damaged and non-damaged highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Fresh blueberries are very susceptible to mechanical damage, which limits postharvest life and firmness. Softening and susceptibility of cultivars 'Duke' and 'Brigitta' to developing internal browning (IB) after mechanical impact and subsequent storage ...

Genomic selection optimization in blueberry: Data‐driven methods for marker and training population design

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 17, Issue 3, September 2024.
Abstract Genomic prediction is a modern approach that uses genome‐wide markers to predict the genetic merit of unphenotyped individuals. With the potential to reduce the breeding cycles and increase the selection accuracy, this tool has been designed to rank genotypes and maximize genetic gains.

Industry needs matter—Incorporating stakeholder interests in the selection of flower resources to support pollinators

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 5, Issue 3, July–September 2024.
The selection of flowering plants for pollination service delivery may differ from those selected for other aims. Plants selected to support crop pollination ideally need to be evaluated both for their use by flower‐visiting taxa, as well as alignment with industry growing practices.

Highbush Blueberry Propagation under Southern U.S. Climatic Conditions1

open access: yesHortScience, 1981
Abstract Hardwood cuttings of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) rooted and grew best in a medium of sphagnum peat alone or in mixtures of peat and sand (1:1 and 2:1 v/v) in full sunlight under intermittent mist. Mixtures of peat and sand are recommended because root breakage is a problem when separating plants produced in peat alone.

Climate and land‐use change impacts on cultural use berries: Considerations for mitigative stewardship

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 4, Page 791-802, July 2024.
Cultural use berries are prized foods and medicines across the United States and Canada, with almost 200 different species used by Indigenous Peoples. Berries are increasingly being impacted by environmental and land‐use change. Berry habitats, how and when berry plants reproduce, and the volume of berries available for harvest each year are shifting ...

Functional traits of expanding, thicket-forming shrubs: contrasting strategies between exotic and native species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Woody expansion has been documented for decades in many different systems globally, often yielding vast changes in ecosystem functioning. While causes and consequences of woody expansion have been well documented, few studies have addressed plant ...

Physical-chemical properties of blueberry as influenced by production and conservation processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this study was evaluated the effect of production mode (organic versus conventional) on some physical-chemical properties of three blueberry cultivars (Duke, Bluecrop, Ozarkblue). The properties evaluated were caliber, moisture content,
