Abstract In this work the problem of stability of the space tethered system for load transportation along the tether is considered. The whole system is designed to “clean” orbits of space debris. The system consists of a «big » satellite moving along a circular or slightly elliptical orbit (orbital station or some satellite for orbital missions where

Stabilizing tethered satellite systems using space manipulators
Proceedings of IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS'94), 2002The use of space manipulators to stabilize a two-body tethered satellite system (TSS) during the stationkeeping and retrieval phases, is considered. The uncontrolled motion of the system in the stationkeeping phase is marginally stable, while during the retrieval phase it is unstable.

Parametric control of maneuver of a space tether system
Cosmic Research, 2015Planar motion of a space tether system (STS) simulated by a massless rod with two masses fixed on its edges and a third mass moving along the rod is considered. An equation of the pendulum-controlled motion of the system in an elliptical orbit is obtained.

Dynamics of Tethered Space Systems
2010During many of the earliest American and Russian space missions, experiments were performed using cables to connect people and objects to spacecraft in orbit. These attempts generated considerable information about the formation of tethered systems and basic problems with tether orientation and gravity-gradient stabilization.

Method of Rapprochement of a Tether System with an Uncontrolled Space Object
Journal of Computer and Systems Sciences InternationalThe problem of rapprochement of a tether system with an uncontrolled space object (space debris, cargo, etc.) in an almost circular near-Earth orbit is considered. The approach method is proposed, which consists in preliminary transfer of an active spacecraft to an orbit, the parameters of which are selected so that in its relative motion it moves ...

Tether attachment point stabilization of noncooperative debris captured by a tethered space system
Acta Astronautica, 2020Abstract Before an active debris removal process is carried out, the attitude stabilization of the debris needs to be executed to ensure security. Fortunately, for the tethered system, a full despun is not always necessary; a stabilization of the motion of the tether attachment point is usually sufficient.

On the control of the space shuttle based tethered systems
Acta Astronautica, 1982Abstract Spatial dynamics of the Space Shuttle based tethered satellite system is investigated using a nonlinear model that accounts for the aerodynamic drag in a rotating oblate atmosphere. Results show that the normally unstable retrieval manoeuver can be stabilized satisfactorily using a nonlinear tether tension control strategy which depends on ...

Operational complexities of real tether systems in space
3rd Tethers in Space/ Toward Flight International Conference, 1989Some of the major operational concerns that have to be addressed in planning a real tether mission, such as the TTS-1 mission, which is due to fly on the Space Shuttle in the early 1990's, are discussed. Specifically, several operational hazards, such as the tether reel overtorque and the loss of tether system control, are considered from the viewpoint

Parameters estimation of space debris captured by tethered robotic system
2014 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO 2014), 2014This paper presents a new scheme for on-line inertia parameters estimation for a rigid space debris captured by a tethered robotic system, based on a new dynamics model of the system where the base satellite and the space debris (target) are modeled as rigid bodies and the attachment points of the tether are offset from the centers of mass of the two ...
