Chemotaxis of sperm cells

open access: yes, 2009
Sperm cells are guided to the egg by chemoattractants in many species. Sperm cells are propelled in a liquid by the regular beat of their flagellum. In the presence of a concentration gradient of a chemoattractant, they can steer upwards the concentration gradient, a process called chemotaxis.

Early stages of tooth development in the harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Here we describe the stages of tooth development in toothed whales on the basis of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). The aim of the study was to find out whether these stages are identical to those of other mammals analyzed so far although toothed whales are homodont and monophyodont.

Hydrodynamic Clustering of Human Sperm in Viscoelastic Fluids

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
We have numerically investigated sperm clustering behaviours, modelling cells as superpositions of regularised flow singularities, coarse-grained from experimentally obtained digital microscopy of human sperm, both in watery medium and a highly viscous ...

The musculature and skeleton of the pelvic fin of the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai (Matsubara, 1936) (Elasmobranchii: Lamniformes): Morphology and sexual dimorphism

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
This work brings new information on the sexual characteristics of the crocodile shark (Pseudocarcharias kamoharai) exploring the pelvic fin musculature, as well as the siphon sac and the musculature and skeleton of the clasper. Our paper is the first to point out clearly the sexual dimorphism related exclusively to the pelvic fin musculature in males ...

Tracing the evolutionary history of the morpho‐anatomy of baculum in primates

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Animal morphology reflects both evolutionary history and present‐day adaptation. Male mammal copulatory structures such as the baculum (penile bone) are ideal for studying these processes because of their complexity and high interspecific variability. In primates, however, research has focused mostly on baculum length.

The Effects of Cell Phone Waves (900 MHz-GSM Band) on Sperm Parameters and Total Antioxidant Capacity in Rats [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fertility and Sterility, 2013
Background: There is tremendous concern regarding the possible adverse effects of cell phone microwaves. Contradictory results, however, have been reported for the effects of these waves on the body.

Developmental morphology of claspers and clasper‐glands during maturation in Potamotrygon wallacei (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygoninae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The claspers are the copulatory organs in male elasmobranchs, responsible for directing the semen into the female cloaca (C). However, the microscopic morphology of the claspers remains poorly understood. This study describes the morphology of the claspers and clasper glands (CGs) of cururu stingray (Potamotrygon wallacei) at different ...
