Measurement and significance of sperm morphology [PDF]

open access: yesAsian Journal of Andrology, 2010
The measurement or evaluation and clinical significance of human sperm morphology has always been and still is a controversial aspect of the semen analysis for the determination of a male's fertility potential. In this review the background of the development of the evaluation criteria for sperm morphology will be discussed. Aspects of criticism on the

Sertoli Cell‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles Orchestrate Cadmium‐Induced Testicular Inflammation and Fibrosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Environmental cadmium exposure disrupts testicular homeostasis through a novel intercellular communication axis. Stressed Sertoli cells release extracellular vesicles carrying damage‐associated molecular patterns and mitochondrial fragments, which activate macrophages via TLR4/NF‐κB signaling.

Selenoproteins in mammalian spermatogenesis:role of the nuclear GPx4 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The selenoprotein Phospholipid Hydroperoxide Glutathione Peroxidase (PHGPx/GPx4) is an enzyme unique among the various GPxs, because it is able to use protein thiols, beside glutathione, The GPx4 gene encodes for three isoforms having different ...

Directed Evolution Improves the Catalytic Efficiency of APEX2‐Mediated Proximity‐Dependent RNA Labeling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Engineered ascorbate peroxidase APEX2 has been widely used for spatially restricted profiling of subcellular biomolecules, but its catalytic efficiency toward newly developed probes such as biotin‐aniline (Btn‐An) remains suboptimal. To overcome this limitation, we performed yeast surface display‐based directed evolution to enhance APEX2 ...

Spermatogenesis and sperm structure in the black-striped pipefish Syngnathus abaster (Teleostei, Syngnathidae) = Spermatogenesi e struttura degli spermatozoi in Syngnathus abaster (Teleostei, Synghathidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The gonads of adult males of the black-striped pipejish Syngnathus abaster were observed during the reproductive season to describe mature sperm both quantitativel/y and qualitatively.

RNA from a simple-tandem repeat is required for sperm maturation and male fertility in Drosophila melanogaster. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Tandemly-repeated DNAs, or satellites, are enriched in heterochromatic regions of eukaryotic genomes and contribute to nuclear structure and function. Some satellites are transcribed, but we lack direct evidence that specific satellite RNAs are required ...

Morphometric analysis of human sperm morphology [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Andrology, 1994
SummaryFourteen morphological forms of human spermatozoa were analysed morphometrically using semi‐automated image analysis techniques. Five basic (area, perimeter, length, width and mass) and five derived (ratio, length minus width, ellipticity, form and total mass) parameters were considered. Statistical analysis showed differences among all 14 types

The Landscape and Regulation of Histone Crotonylation in Mammalian Gametes and Early Embryos

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Histone crotonylation undergoes a genome‐wide transition from broad domains to canonical narrow peaks during minor zygotic genome activation (ZGA). This remodeling is required for proper major ZGA and blastocyst formation. Disruption of this transition by transcriptional inhibition, metabolic perturbation, or HDAC1 dysfunction impairs embryonic ...

Choice of staining technique affects the morphological assessment of epididymal feline sperm

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2016
Morphological examination of spermatozoa remains a valuable tool for determining the quality of feline sperm for cryopreservation and/or for use in artificial insemination.
