Existence and stability analysis of spiky solutions for the Gierer-Meinhardt system with large reaction rates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We study the Gierer-Meinhardt system in one dimension in the limit of large reaction rates. First we construct three types of solutions: (i) an interior spike; (ii) a boundary spike and (iii) two boundary spikes.

“Dax's Case”: Autonomy and Paternalism

open access: yesMedEdPORTAL, 2008
One of the most important assumptions of patient-centered ethics (and narrative ethics) is that one cannot do justice to a case without knowing all of the social, economic, religious, and psychological factors that may influence the process.

The Computational Structure of Spike Trains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Neurons perform computations, and convey the results of those computations through the statistical structure of their output spike trains. Here we present a practical method, grounded in the information-theoretic analysis of prediction, for inferring a ...

Rescue of a Live-Attenuated Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus HSGP Strain Using a Virulent Strain and a Partially Attenuated Strain

open access: yesViruses, 2023
In South Korea in 2013, the G1-based vaccine failed to prevent an outbreak of G2b-type porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), which is more pathogenic than the traditional G1-type strain, thereby allowing the virus to spread.

Mice Immunized with the Vaccine Candidate HexaPro Spike Produce Neutralizing Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2

open access: yesVaccines, 2021
Updated and revised versions of COVID-19 vaccines are vital due to genetic variations of the SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen. Furthermore, vaccines that are safe, cost-effective, and logistic-friendly are critically needed for global equity, especially for ...

Patient-Centered Medicine: Writing Your Patient's Life Story

open access: yesMedEdPORTAL, 2008
In this module, the learners must write up a patient's life story, a narrative account of a patient the student is seeing. This not only gives the student a chance to understand the impact of medicine on one patient in great personal depth, but it is ...

Spiked monopoles [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
Abstract We introduce the spiked monopole, which is a ’t Hooft-Polyakov monopole with two charged scalar Higgs fields, of which one enjoys a quartic self-interaction. The free Higgs field behaves as in a BPS monopole, reducing the inter-monopole repulsion. The other Higgs has a spiked profile similar to a non-BPS monopole.
