Accurate Decomposition of Galaxies with Spiral Arms: Dust Properties and Distribution

open access: yesGalaxies
We analyze three nearby spiral galaxies—NGC 1097, NGC 1566, and NGC 3627—using images from the DustPedia database in seven infrared bands (3.6, 8, 24, 70, 100, 160, and 250 μm).

Recent Advances in Electrospun Nanofibers for Triboelectric Nanogenerators: Performance Enhancement Strategies and Emerging Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights recent advances in electrospun nanofiber‐based triboelectric nanogenerators, emphasizing how material design, fiber architecture, and interface engineering collectively enhance output performance and mechanical durability. Key developments in porous, aligned, core‐shell, and hierarchical nanofibers are discussed alongside ...

Three-Dimensional Distribution of the ISM in the Milky Way Galaxy: III. The Total Neutral Gas Disk

open access: yes, 2015
We present newly obtained three-dimensional gaseous maps of the Milky Way Galaxy; HI, H$_2$ and total-gas (HI plus H$_2$) maps, which were derived from the HI and $^{12}$CO($J=1$--0) survey data and rotation curves based on the kinematic distance. The HI

Turning Unpredictable Biomolecule Adsorption to Controlled Corona Formation: Focus on Carbon Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the protein corona formation onto carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) enhances their functionalities as platforms for cancer theranostics. Here, we reviewed the effects of the intrinsic and acquired properties of CNMs on protein corona formation, the consequent biological and toxicological outcomes, and the strategies to reshape corona formation ...

Comparing Dynamical Effects of the Central Bar and the Spiral Arms in the Solar Neighborhood

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The dynamical effects on the stellar motion produced by the Galactic central bar and the spiral arms perturbations are investigated separately and compared.

Quantifying the Unwinding Due to Ram Pressure Stripping in Simulated Galaxies

open access: yesGalaxies
Galaxies moving through the gas of the intracluster medium (ICM) experience ram pressure stripping, which can leave behind a gas tail. When a disk galaxy receives the wind edge-on, however, the characteristic signature is not a typical jellyfish tail ...

Stellar and Molecular Gas Kinematics of NGC1097: Inflow Driven by a Nuclear Spiral

open access: yes, 2009
We present spatially resolved distributions and kinematics of the stars and molecular gas in the central 320pc of NGC1097. The stellar continuum confirms the previously reported 3-arm spiral pattern extending into the central 100pc.

Topological Point Defects in SmC* Liquid Crystals Under Mechanical Disturbance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Tangetial air jet shear inducess island formation and nucleates topological point defects in uniform SmC films. Island bounded by edge dislocation loops shrink and transform into isolated point defects under continued shear. Mechanical perturbatio provides a controllable route for defect engineering in smectric liquid crystal thin films.

Morphology and Kinematics of the Gas in M51: How Interaction with NGC 5195 Has Molded the Structure of Its Arms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Whirlpool Galaxy is a well-studied grand design galaxy with two major spiral arms, and a large satellite NGC 5195. The arms both show long uniform sections with perturbations (“kinks” or sharp turns) in specific regions.

Galactic spiral patterns and dynamo action I: A new twist on magnetic arms

open access: yes, 2012
We generalise the theory of mean-field galactic dynamos by allowing for temporal non-locality in the mean electromotive force (emf). This arises in random flows due to a finite response time of the mean emf to changes in the mean magnetic field, and ...
