The nature of arms in spiral galaxies

open access: yes, 2003
We present here the results of an imaging study of eight grand-design and two intermediate-arm galaxies, based on CCD observations in U, B, V, R and I. We give grey-scale images, both in individual and in colour indices.

Bottom’s Dream and the Amplification of Filamentary Gas Structures and Stellar Spiral Arms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Theories of spiral structure traditionally separate into tight-winding Lin–Shu spiral density waves and the swing-amplified material patterns of Goldreich & Lynden-Bell and Julian & Toomre.

Bioinspired Soft‐Skeleton Robotics With Cooperative Shape Transformation and Stiffness Adaptation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A bioinspired soft‐skeleton robot that integrates variable‐stiffness chain skeletons into a soft textile skin is developed. The chain skeletons are highly flexible initially but can stiffen upon pneumatic actuation, enabling large deformation and enhanced load‐bearing capacity.

Magnetic spiral arms and galactic outflows

open access: yes
Galactic magnetic arms have been observed between the gaseous arms of some spiral galaxies; their origin remains unclear. We suggest that magnetic spiral arms can be naturally generated in the interarm regions because the galactic fountain flow or wind ...

Design and Modeling of a High‐Displacement, Skin‐Integrated Flexible Electromagnetic Actuator for Haptic Interfaces in Virtual Reality

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A flexible, skin‐integrated electromagnetic actuator is developed for wearable virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) haptic systems. A tunable design model enables control over displacement and resonance frequency. The system is validated through a custom VR application with a 6 × 4 actuator array, demonstrating real‐time, spatially targeted tactile ...

Magnetic and gaseous spiral arms in M83

open access: yes
Context. The magnetic field configurations in several nearby spiral galaxies contain magnetic arms that are sometimes located between the material arms.

Enhanced Small-Scale Faraday Rotation in the Galactic Spiral Arms

open access: yes, 2006
We present an analysis of the rotation measures (RMs) of polarized extragalactic point sources in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. This work demonstrates that the statistics of fluctuations in RM differ for the spiral arms and the interarm regions ...

Strategic Design of Soft Actuators in Translational Medical Robotics for Human‐Centered Healthcare

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Soft robotics enables biocompatible, compliant medical devices, but clinical translation requires design‐driven engineering beyond materials. This perspective reviews implantable, surgical, and wearable systems by actuation mechanism, highlighting how optimized architectures and integration improve mechanical interfacing, adaptability, and durability ...

The molecular spiral arms of NGC 6946

open access: yes, 1990
From CO-12(J=1 to 0) observations at 45 seconds resolution Tacconi and Young (1989) have found evidence for enhancements in both the CO emissivity and the massive star formation efficiency (MSFE) on optical spiral arms of the bright spiral galaxy NGC ...

A numerical study of spiral galaxies and dynamical effects of spiral arms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We use high-resolution numerical simulations of disc galaxies to study spiral arms and their dynamical influence on nearby stars. We find that in the numerical simulations the spiral arms are winding, transient features whose pattern speeds decrease with
