Neurotoxic amyloid β‐peptide and tau produce cytokine‐like effects on PMCA in glioblastoma cell lines, enhancing its activity and isoforms expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Two biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease, amyloid β‐peptide (Aβ) and tau, induce the transformation of U‐251 and other glioblastoma cell lines into neurotoxic A1‐like reactive astrocytes. This transformation is produced by cytokines and is followed by upregulation of PMCA activity and isoform expression, and is closely associated with inflammation, as ...

Redox regulation of mammalian sperm capacitation

open access: yesAsian Journal of Andrology, 2015
Capacitation is a series of morphological and metabolic changes necessary for the spermatozoon to achieve fertilizing ability. One of the earlier happenings during mammalian sperm capacitation is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that will ...

Splice Diagram Singularities and The Universal Abelian Cover of Graph Orbifolds [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
Given a rational homology sphere M, whose splice diagram satisfy the semigroup condition, Neumann and Wahl were able to define a complete intersection surface singularity called splice diagram singularity from the splice diagram of M. They were also able to show that under an additional hypothesis on M called the congruence condition, the link of the ...

Alternative Splicing and Cancer

open access: yesJournal of Nucleic Acids, 2012
Alternative splicing of premessenger RNAs is a key step in the gene expression process, which allows the synthesis of different products from the same gene and contributes to increase the complexity of the proteome coded by a limited number of genes. Specialized high-throughput technologies (RNA-Seq, splicing-sensitive microarrays) aiming at analyzing ...

Iron‐dependent lysosomal LDL oxidation induces the expression of scavenger receptor A in human THP‐1 monocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In human monocytic cells THP‐1, a limited uptake of native—not oxidized—LDL/VLDL induced expression of scavenger receptor A and cellular adhesion. Induction was inhibited by lysosomotropic (WR‐1065) and lipophilic (BHT) antioxidants and by siRNAs against ferritinophagy.

Behavioral mechanisms of mammalian sperm guidance

open access: yesAsian Journal of Andrology, 2015
In mammals, sperm guidance in the oviduct appears essential for successful sperm arrival at the oocyte. Hitherto, three different potential sperm guidance mechanisms have been recognized: thermotaxis, rheotaxis, and chemotaxis, each of them using ...

The role of circular RNAs in regulating cytokine signaling in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cytokines present in the tumor microenvironment fuel cancer development. Aberrant expression of circRNAs contributes to cancer progression. Cytokines are involved in regulating circRNA biogenesis. Furthermore, aberrantly expressed circRNAs regulate the expression of ligands, receptors, and downstream effectors involved in cytokine signaling to promote ...

TTN novel splice variant in familial dilated cardiomyopathy and splice variants review: a case report

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine
This case report details the identification of a novel likely pathogenic splicing variant in the TTN gene, associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), in a 42-year-old male patient presenting with early-onset heart failure and reduced ejection fraction.

Effect of transient scrotal hyperthermia on sperm parameters, seminal plasma biochemical markers, and oxidative stress in men

open access: yesAsian Journal of Andrology, 2015
In this experimental prospective study, we aimed to analyze the effect of transient scrotal hyperthermia on the male reproductive organs, from the perspective of sperm parameters, semen plasma biochemical markers, and oxidative stress, to evaluate ...

Analysis of differential splicing suggests different modes of short-term splicing regulation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Motivation: Alternative splicing is an important mechanism in which the regions of pre-mRNAs are differentially joined in order to form different transcript isoforms. Alternative splicing is involved in the regulation of normal physiological functions but also linked to the development of diseases such as cancer.
