Biogeochemical Processes at Hydrothermal Vents: Microbes and Minerals, Bioenergetics, and Carbon Fluxes [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2012
Hydrothermal vents are among the most biologically active regions of the deep ocean. However, our understanding of the limits of life in this extreme environment, the extent of biogeochemical transformation that occurs in the crust and overlying ocean ...

Colony spreading of the gliding bacterium Flavobacterium johnsoniae in the absence of the motility adhesin SprB

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Colony spreading of Flavobacterium johnsoniae is shown to include gliding motility using the cell surface adhesin SprB, and is drastically affected by agar and glucose concentrations.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Volcanic Eruptions in the Deep Sea [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2012
Volcanic eruptions are important events in Earth's cycle of magma generation and crustal construction. Over durations of hours to years, eruptions produce new deposits of lava and/or fragmentary ejecta, transfer heat and magmatic volatiles from Earth's ...

Rassemblement et dispersion dans la ville latino-américaine

open access: yesCahiers des Amériques Latines, 2000
This paper aims to show how shopping centers in Latin-American cities create a relationship between spreading and concentration that is different from traditional urban public spaces like squares.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Epidemic spread of Pandoraea pulmonicola in a cystic fibrosis center [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2015
Pandoraea spp. are recently discovered bacteria, mainly recovered from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, but their epidemiology and clinical significance are not well known. We describe an epidemic spread of Pandoraea pulmonicola from 2009 in our CF center, involving 6 out of 243 CF patients.Bacterial identification used amplified ribosomal DNA ...

Hydrothermal Discharge During Submarine Eruptions: The Importance of Detection, Response, and New Technology [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2012
Submarine volcanic eruptions and intrusions construct new oceanic crust and build long chains of volcanic islands and vast submarine plateaus. Magmatic events are a primary agent for the transfer of heat, chemicals, and even microbes from the crust to ...
