Spurious modes in finite-element methods

IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, 1995
This paper describes the problem of spurious modes that appear with finite-element solutions of the vector wave equation. It explains that this problem is caused by inconsistent approximations of the static solutions to the wave equation. Tangential-vector finite elements are described that enforce the tangential continuity of the vector field, but ...

Spurious modes in geometrically nonlinear small displacement finite elements with incompatible modes

Computers & Structures, 2014
We demonstrate the existence of spurious modes in finite elements with incompatible modes when a geometrically nonlinear displacement analysis with small displacements and strains is performed. The spurious modes are a direct consequence of the incompatibility of the elements with displacement boundary conditions.

Transition section spurious mode program

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1976
A transition section spurious mode program is presented to calculate the magnitude and phase of propagating modes in H-plane waveguide transition sections with large flare angles. This program is based on a full wave analysis which employs local radial waveguide modes.

Spurious modes in two‐dimensional isoparametric elements

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1979
AbstractThe reasons for the presence of spurious modes in plane isoparametric elements are examined. Eigenvalue and eigenvector analyses of stiffness matrices for single elements and unconstrained and constrained meshes reveal the types of mechanisms and near‐mechanisms that can be expected when reduced or selective integration techniques are used with

Spurious Mode Free Hexagonal PMUT Array

2019 20th International Conference on Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems & Eurosensors XXXIII (TRANSDUCERS & EUROSENSORS XXXIII), 2019
This paper presents a hexagonal piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT) array that can avoid spurious modes known to occur by mode coupling with adjacent elements. By designing an optimal hexagonal PMUT array with 10 µm spacing resulting in high fill-factor, we were able to experimentally demonstrate well-matched spurious mode free ...
