A theoretical study of aromaticity in squaramide and oxocarbons

open access: yesTetrahedron Letters, 2000
Abstract A systematic estimation of aromaticity in oxocarbon acids, their dianions, squaramide and its complex with the ammonium cation have been studied using structural and magnetic criteria. Results based on Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift (NICS) predict that deltic and squaric acids and their dianions are aromatic, while croconic and ...

The Squaramide versus Urea Contest for Anion Recognition

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, 2010
AbstractThe interaction of a neutral squaramide‐based receptor, equipped with two 4‐nitrophenyl substituents (Rsq), with halides and oxoanions has been studied in MeCN. UV/Vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy titration experiments clearly indicated the formation of 1:1 hydrogen bonding [Rsq⋅⋅⋅X]+ complexes with all the investigated anions.

Squaramide as a binding unit in molecular recognition

open access: yesChemical Physics Letters, 2000
Abstract Urea and squaramide are used as building blocks of powerful hosts which are involved in the molecular recognition of quaternary ammonium guests. Complexes of urea and squaramide with ammonium cations were studied using both high level MP2/6-311+G** ab initio and molecular interaction potential with polarization and MEP calculations, in order

Squaramides for colorimetric and fluorescent anion sensing

Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, 2023
Simple squaramides bearing two fluorophores provide either colourimetric or fluorescent responses to oxoanions. Insertion of a methylene spacer between the fluorophore and squaramide leads to a ratiometirc fluorescent response to anions.

Squaramides as Bioisosteres in Contemporary Drug Design

Chemical Reviews, 2020
Squaramides represent a class of vinylogous amides that are derived from the squarate oxocarbon dianion. While they have been known since the 1950s, squaramides have only recently emerged (in the last 10-20 years) as particularly useful chemical entities in a variety of applications.

Thermodynamic characterization of the squaramide–carboxylate interaction in squaramide receptors

Tetrahedron Letters, 2001
Abstract The thermodynamic characterization of squaramides is described. This fundamental information shows that the association in chloroform or DMSO is mainly exothermic. In contrast, in MeOH the equilibrium is endothermic and is entropically driven.

Squaramide Equilibrium Acidities in DMSO

Organic Letters, 2014
A number of popular squaramide organocatalysts' acidities were determined by an overlapping indicator method in DMSO via UV spectrophotometric titrations. The pKa values are in the range of 8.37-16.46. The results may be helpful for the rational design and development of squaramide type new catalysts.

Squaramide‐Catalyzed Asymmetric Reactions

The Chemical Record, 2017
AbstractBifunctional squaramides have emerged as powerful hydrogen‐bonding catalysts for promoting a wide array of useful asymmetric reactions, which provides convenient methods for the construction of complex molecular structures and chiral biologically active compounds.
