An experimental study on the brake squeal noise

open access: yes, 2004
The name "brake squeal" groups a large set of high frequency sound emissions from brake systems, generated during the braking phase and characterized by a periodic or harmonic spectrum. This paper presents an extensive set of measurements performed on a laboratory disc brake designed to provide a reliable tool for the study of the squeal noise.

A Study of Squeal Noise in Vehicle Brake System

open access: yesVolume 8: Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Fluids; Vibration, Acoustics and Wave Propagation, 2011
Disc brake squeal can be classified as a form of friction-induced vibration. Eliminating brake noise is a classic challenge in the automotive industry. This paper presents methods for analyzing the unstable vibration of a car disc brake. The numerical simulation has been conducted, and its results are compared with those from the experimental tests ...

Squeal noise analysis in a freight railway

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2021
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Noise pollution resulting from technological development, urbanization and economic growth is one of the major sources of complaints in urban areas. The sound generated by transportation systems, is one of the most important causes of noise-induced annoyance, since the exposure ...

Transient models for curve squeal noise

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2006
Abstract The paper deals with numerical models of railway wheel noise occurring in narrow curves. Curve squeal is presumed to issue from a lateral creepage of the wheels on the rail head. The frequency range is from around 400 to almost 8000 Hz, with noise levels up to 120 dB close to the wheel.

Squealing noise in light rail transport systems: Implications in noise mapping.

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2009
Squealing noise is generated by railway vehicles riding through curves having closed radius. It is a result of wheels sliding on the rail when they negotiate a curve. This kind of noise is very annoying for people living in the surrounding areas where this phenomenon occurs because it has a characteristic spectrum that is dominated by discrete ...

Prediction of wheel squeal noise under mode coupling

open access: yesJournal of Sound and Vibration, 2020
Wheel squeal vibration and noise amplitude under the effects of mode coupling and rising and falling creep behavior is investigated and predicted using an efficient analytical model. Based on previous research, a simplified modal dynamics model for wheel

Linear and Nonlinear Numerical Approaches to Brake Squeal Noise

Civil-Comp Proceedings, 2009
"Brake squeal" groups a large set of high frequency sound emissions from brake systems, generated during the braking phase and characterized by a harmonic spectrum. The arising of squeal phenomenon is due to an unstable behaviour that occurs in linear conditions, during the braking phase.

Receptance based structural modification in a simple brake-clutch model for squeal noise suppression [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 2017
Unlike brake squeal, brake-clutch squeal has rarely been studied, even though the cause of squeal noise is identical – dry friction acting at the contact interface.

INDUSTRIAL NOISE IN RAILWAY YARDS; THE PROBLEM OF SQUEAL NOISE

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1996
Abstract The Netherlands Railways have great problems in satisfying the noise limits in railway yards. A short description of the Dutch noise legislation for railways is given. One of the noise sources in railway yards is squeal noise. An investigation has been started in order to reduce this noise.

Viscoelastic Damping Effect on Brake Squeal Noise

Volume 4: 7th International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Control, Parts A, B and C, 2009
Brake squeal remains a widespread cause for discomfort in automobiles. Manufacturers overcome this problem by adding damping materials in their systems. The purpose of this work is to take into account the damping in the modeling. As the materials exhibit a viscoelastic behavior, the authors chose to model the damping with the Generalized Maxwell model.
