Bimetallic (NiFe) and Trimetallic (NiFeCr) Nanoalloys from Metal Oxides Using a Microwave Hydrogen Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bimetallic (NiFe) and trimetallic (NiFeCr) nanoalloys (NAs) are synthesized using corresponding oxide mixtures using microwave hydrogen plasma within a few milliseconds. The process simultaneously 1) reduces metal oxides to metals; 2) downsizes the particles from micrometers to nanometers; and 3) blends the metals to form NAs.

Combined effect of interstitial-substitutional elements on dislocation dynamics in nitrogen-added austenitic stainless steels

open access: yesScientific Reports
Combined addition of interstitial-substitutional elements has been acknowledged to contribute to the increase in the strengths of steels. For further improvements in mechanical properties, their atomic-scale interaction mechanisms with dislocations are ...

Thermocouples easily installed in hard-to- get-to places [PDF]

open access: yes, 1966
Thermocouple wires attached to charged capacitors are inserted in a drilled hole. An electric charge fuses the thermocouple wires to the host material.

Thermoelectric Modules Incorporating MgAgSb and Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 Synthesized Using a Melting Method

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable synthesis method for a thermoelectric material of MgAgSb is established. A thermoelectric power module of MgAgSb/Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 is fabricated, showing the conversion efficiency of 7.4% at ΔT = 315 K. The performance is comparable to conventional Bi2Te3 modules when they are operated with an air‐cooled heat exchanger.

3D‐Printed Serial Snap‐Through Architectures for Programmable Mechanical Response

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A serial snap‐through architecture is realized using compact 3D‐printed von Mises truss units arranged in a staged cascade. Their geometry and boundary conditions program multistage mechanical responses with plateaux and re‐hardening regimes. An inverted‐compliance model predicts these behaviors and enables analytical design of programmable force ...

Effect of Nb on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a hot-rolled dual-phase steel produced by TMCP

open access: yesHigh Temperature Materials and Processes
Nb microalloying is of significance to the grain refinement and mechanical properties of DP steels. In the present study, two DP steels without/with addition of Nb were produced by the TMCP process and the effect of Nb on the microstructure and ...

Inhibition Effect of N, N'-Dimethylaminoethanol on the Corrosion of Austenitic Stainless Steel Type 304 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The effect of N,N'-dimethylaminoethanol on the corrosion of austenitic stainless steel type 304 in 3M H2SO4 has been studied by weight-loss method and linear polarization measurement in different concentrations of the compound.

Ideal Molecular Sieving with a Dense MOF for Helium Upgrading with Highly Diffusion Selective Mixed Matrix Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The separation of Helium gas from natural gas is challenging but highly important. MIL‐116(Ga), a “non‐porous” metal–organic framework is used as a molecular sieve to separate He from CH4. Druse‐like MIL‐116(Ga) particles are integrated into polysulfone mixed matrix membranes.
