Vane Clocking Effects on Stall Margin in a Multistage Compressor

48th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2012
Vane clocking is the circumferential indexing of adjacent vane rows with similar vane counts. There are no reports in the open literature regarding clocking effects on stall margin. Recent vane clocking investigations showed a measurable impact on embedded stage efficiency in a three-stage axial compressor research facility.

A Stall Margin Design Method for Planar and Axisymmetric Diffusers

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1983
An inverse design method is presented which gives the user control over stall margin, or distance from detachment, along the walls of planar and axisymmetric diffusers. It is proposed that optimum diffuser designs have continuous incipient detachment along their wall boundary layers.

Stall Margin Improvement by Casing Treatment—Its Mechanism and Effectiveness

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1977
Experiments on the effect of casing treatment were carried out using low-speed axial-flow compressors. Results on the overall compressor performance and on the flow through the blade row as well as the flow within the treatment slots are presented. Then, based on the experiments, a possible mechanism of the stall margin improvement is suggested.

Flow and Performance Calculations of Axial Compressor near Stall Margin

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2010
Three‐dimensional flows through a Low Speed Research Axial Compressor were numerically conducted in order to estimate the performance through unsteady and steady‐state simulations. The first stage with the inlet guide vane was investigated at the design point to confirm that the rotor blade induced periodicity exists.

Development of Stall Margin Instrumentation Designed for use in Icing Conditions

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2003
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper presents further development of stall margin instrumentation designed for use in icing conditions. Initial work developing this instrumentation was conducted on a NACA 0018 wing model in Western Michigan University's wind tunnel.<span class="xref">1</span> The results ...

Stall Margin Improvement in a Centrifugal Compressor Through Endwall Reshaping

ASME 2012 Gas Turbine India Conference, 2012
This paper presents the results of numerical studies on the effect of endwall reshaping on the performance and stall margin of a centrifugal compressor. The endwall (shroud) of a baseline compressor was reshaped by introducing a convex hump at a location downstream of the inducer where the flow turns from axial to radial direction.

Low speed axial compressor stall margin improvement by unsteady plasma actuation

Journal of Thermal Science, 2014
This research investigates the use of single dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) actuators for energizing the tip leakage flow to suppress rotating stall inception and extend the stable operating range of a low speed axial compressor with a single rotor.

Surrogate-Based Shape Optimization of Stall Margin and Efficiency of a Centrifugal Compressor

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2015
Centrifugal compressors are required to increase their operating range and efficiency, which are limited at low mass flow rates by the rotating stall and surge. This paper presents a surrogate-based multi-objective optimization of a centrifugal compressor to improve its efficiency and stall margin.

Correlation Measure-Based Stall Margin Estimation for a Single-Stage Axial Compressor

Volume 3: Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Electric Power; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery; Solar Brayton and Rankine Cycle, 2011
This paper presents a method for estimating compressor stall margin and the results of applying the estimation technique to an axial compressor rig. Stall margin estimation is accomplished through the use of a compressor stability detection parameter called the “correlation measure.” The correlation measure captures the periodicity of the pressure in ...

Influence of Compressor Deterioration on Engine Dynamic Behavior and Transient Stall-Margin

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1999
This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation of compressor stability assessment during engine transient operation. A two-dimensional, linear, compressible, state-space analysis of stall-inception (Feulner et al., 1996, ASME J. Turbomach., 118, pp. 1–10) was modified to account for engine transients and deterioration, with the latter
