Age- and sex-specific effects of maternal separation on the acoustic startle reflex in rats: early baseline enhancement in females and blunted response to ambiguous threat

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2022
Early life adversity (ELA) increases the incidence of later-life anxiety disorders. Dysregulated threat processing, including responsivity to ambiguous threats, is an indicator of anxiety disorders and can be influenced by childhood experiences.

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.

Creep Properties and Deformation Mechanism of Additively Manufactured NiAl‐CrMo Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured NiAl‐CrMo composites contain numerous interfaces and cell boundaries that control their creep response. At 700°C under high applied stress, creep is dominated by dislocation‐controlled power‐law mechanisms. At 800°C–900°C and lower stresses, creep is primarily diffusion‐controlled along cell boundaries.

Stress Resilience Assessment Based on Physiological Features in Selection of Air Traffic Controllers

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Stress resilience is recognized as an important occupational prerequisite for air traffic controllers (ATCs). A system for input/output multimodal stress resilience assessment based on physiological features has been developed and applied in the ATC ...

EMG-Free Monitorization of the Acoustic Startle Reflex with a Mobile Phone: Implications of Sound Parameters with Posture Related Responses

open access: yesSensors, 2020
(1) Background: Acute acoustic (sound) stimulus prompts a state of defensive motivation in which unconscious muscle responses are markedly enhanced in humans.

Blunted startle reactivity in everyday sadism and psychopathy

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Two studies examined the amplitude of the startle response as a function of the Dark Tetrad of personality (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism). We measured electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle evoked by a startle

A simple method for measuring the acoustic startle response using a low-cost electromyography acquisition device

open access: yes, 2020
Acoustic startle response and its prepulse inhibition have been used as tools for elucidating auditory information processing of humans and animals and for screening some mental disorders such as schizophrenia. However, measuring these phenomena requires

Startle response related genes

open access: yes, 2011
The startle reaction (also known as the startle response, the startle reflex, or the alarm reaction) is the psychological and physiological response to a sudden unexpected stimulus, such as a flash of light, a loud noise (acoustic startle reflex), or a ...

Electrode and Microstructure Dependence of Oxygen Diffusion in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Significant nanoscale oxygen diffusion coefficient variations are measured in ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide films with grain boundaries and electrode interfaces exhibiting values 104 times larger than the grain cores. Overall coefficients are 10X larger for films prepared with metal nitride electrodes compared to refractory metals. New insights

Changes in neurobiological markers of reactivity to alcohol-related stimuli in alcohol-dependent patients after two years of treatment

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry
BackgroundSalience and cortisol response following exposure to alcohol-related stimuli (ARS) are considered markers of vulnerability and status in alcohol use disorders (AUD).
