Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

An Evaluation of the Use of Statistical Procedures in Soil Science

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo, 2016
Experimental statistical procedures used in almost all scientific papers are fundamental for clearer interpretation of the results of experiments conducted in agrarian sciences.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Towards Analyzable Design Paradigms for Chaos-Based Cryptographic Primitives

open access: yesJournal of Cybersecurity and Privacy
Although many chaos-based cryptosystems have been proposed over the past decade, they have yet to gain traction in real-world applications. A key reason for this is that most designs rely on security through obscurity, with unnecessarily complex ...

Using an incomplete block design to allocate lines to environments improves sparse genome‐based prediction in plant breeding

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, 2022
Genomic selection (GS) is a predictive methodology that trains statistical machine‐learning models with a reference population that is used to perform genome‐enabled predictions of new lines.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Blocking and re-arrangement of pots in greenhouse experiments: which approach is more effective?

open access: yesPlant Methods, 2019
Background Observations measured in field and greenhouse experiments always contain errors. These errors can arise from measurement error, local or positional conditions of the experimental units, or from the randomization of experimental units.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Robust Tests for Treatment Effect in Survival Analysis under Covariate-Adaptive Randomization

open access: yes, 2019
Covariate-adaptive randomization is popular in clinical trials with sequentially arrived patients for balancing treatment assignments across prognostic factors which may have influence on the response.
