Stellar streams around dwarf galaxies in the local Universe

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. While mergers between massive galaxies and their dwarf satellites have been well studied, the properties of dwarf–dwarf satellite mergers are not well constrained.

Accretion in supergiant High Mass X-ray Binaries

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2014
Supergiant High Mass X-ray Binary systems (sgHMXBs) consist of a massive, late type, star and a neutron star. The massive stars exhibits strong, radiatively driven, stellar winds.

Accretion in stellar clusters and the IMF

open access: yes, 2001
We present a simple physical mechanism that can account for the observed stellar mass spectrum for masses $\ms \simgreat 0.5 \solm$. The model depends solely on the competitive accretion that occurs in stellar clusters where each star's accretion rate depends on the local gas density and the square of the accretion radius.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Radiation Hydrodynamic Simulations of Massive Stars in Gas-rich Environments: Accretion of AGN Stars Suppressed by Thermal Feedback

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Massive stars may form in or be captured into active galactic nuclei (AGN) disks. Recent 1D studies employing stellar-evolution codes have demonstrated the potential for rapid growth of such stars through accretion up to a few hundred solar masses.

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...

Tests of Disk-locking in T Tauri Stars of the Orion Nebula Cluster

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We look for specific correlations predicted by magnetospheric accretion models for young stars that assume disk-locking using stellar and accretion parameters derived from low-resolution HST-STIS spectra of 33 T Tauri stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster ...

Neutron star accretion in a stellar envelope

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1993
Steady spherically symmetric accretion onto a neutron star is possible for a mass accretion rate ˙M≥10 −3 M ○. yr −1 ; the gravitational energy is lost to neutrinos. In the scenario of neutron star spiral-in through a massive stellar envelope, the neutron star accretion rate derived from the Bondi-Hoyle theory is ≥0.2 M ○. yr −1 . Radiation pressure

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Merger-driven Growth of Intermediate-mass Black Holes: Constraints from Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Hyper-luminous X-Ray Sources

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Hyper-luminous X-ray sources (HLXs) are extragalactic off-nuclear X-ray sources with luminosities exceeding the theoretical limit for accretion onto stellar-mass compact objects.
