Accretion Disks in the Sub-Stellar Realm: Properties and Evolution [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractIt is now well established that young brown dwarfs harbor accretion disks –and thus undergo a T Tauri phase– similar to their low-mass stellar counterparts. The supporting evidence includes infrared and millimeter observations of the dust component as well as optical and infrared spectra with signatures of gas accretion and outflow.

Creep Properties and Deformation Mechanism of Additively Manufactured NiAl‐CrMo Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured NiAl‐CrMo composites contain numerous interfaces and cell boundaries that control their creep response. At 700°C under high applied stress, creep is dominated by dislocation‐controlled power‐law mechanisms. At 800°C–900°C and lower stresses, creep is primarily diffusion‐controlled along cell boundaries.

The Population of Massive Stars in Active Galactic Nuclei Disks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Gravitational instability in the outskirts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) disks leads to disk fragmentation and formation of ∼300 M _⊙ supermassive stars with potentially long lifetimes.

Viscous diffusion and photoevaporation of stellar disks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The evolution of a stellar disk under the influence of viscous evolution, photoevaporation from the central source, and photoevaporation by external stars is studied. We take the typical parameters of TTSs and the Trapezium Cluster conditions.

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

On the circum(sub)stellar environment of brown dwarfs in Taurus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Aims : We want to investigate whether brown dwarfs (BDs) form like stars or are ejected embryos. We study the presence of disks around BDs in the Taurus cloud, and discuss implications for substellar formation models.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Inherent Self-consistency of the Electron Fraction between Neutrino-dominated Accretion Flows and Their Progenitors

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Stellar-mass black holes (BHs) surrounded by neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) are a leading central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this work, we investigate the electron fraction distribution in NDAFs with or without disk outflows for ...

Transitional disks and their origins: an infrared spectroscopic survey of Orion A

open access: yes, 2013
Transitional disks are protoplanetary disks around young stars, with inner holes or gaps which are surrounded by optically thick outer, and often inner, disks.

Biomass Native Structure Into Functional Carbon‐Based Catalysts for Fenton‐Like Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study indicates that eight biomasses with 2D flaky and 1D acicular structures influence surface O types, morphology, defects, N doping, sp2 C, and Co nanoparticles loading in three series of carbon, N‐doped carbon, and cobalt/graphitic carbon. This work identifies how these structural factors impact catalytic pathways, enhancing selective electron
