NORMAL haematopoiesis is initiated and maintained by haematopoietic stem cells. These cells perform two functions: (1) they differentiate into mature haemic elements, and (2) they maintain and renew the population of stem cells. It is these stem cells which seed, differentiate and reproduce, thus effecting successful haematopoietic transplants.
