Isolation and identification of antitrypanosomal and antimycobacterial active steroids from the sponge haliclona simulans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The marine sponge Haliclona simulans collected from the Irish Sea yielded two new steroids: 24-vinyl-cholest-9-ene-3β,24-diol and 20-methyl-pregn-6-en-3β-ol,5a,8a-epidioxy, along with the widely distributed 24-methylenecholesterol.

Impact of Inoculation Strategy on Dendrobium nobile Lindl. Rice Wine Quality Through the Use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae FBKL2.8022 and Wickerhamomyces anomalus FBKL2.8023. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
This graphical abstract compares four fermentation strategies for D. nobile rice wine: simultaneous inoculation without D. nobile (SW), simultaneous inoculation with D. nobile (DnSW), sequential inoculation without D. nobile (WS), and sequential inoculation with D. nobile (DnWS). Simultaneous inoculation (SW/DnSW) enhanced volatile compound content (up

Neuroactive steroids in depression and anxiety disorders: Clinical studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Certain neuroactive steroids modulate ligand-gated ion channels via non-genomic mechanisms. Especially 3 alpha-reduced pregnane steroids are potent positive allosteric modulators of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptor.

Electrocatalytic Polarity Inversion of Azlactones: Access to α‐Quaternary Amino Acids with Electron‐Rich SOMOphiles

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Electrocatalytic polarity inversion of azlactones unlocks their coupling with electron‐rich reaction partners. Triarylamine‐mediated oxidation of the azlactone enolate generates an electrophilic radical intermediate that undergoes selective C4 functionalization with diverse SOMOphiles.

A Modular Synthesis of C5‐Sulfenyl Thiazoles via an Intermolecular Pummerer Rearrangement: An Underexplored Scaffold for Medicinal Chemistry

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Modular access to underexplored C5‐sulfenyl thiazoles via an intermolecular Pummerer rearrangement is reported. The methodology exhibits a broad functional group tolerance enabling the seamless design of trisubstituted thiazole cores bearing a sulfur handle for further elaboration.

Adaptive Hydrogenation of Alkynes Using CO as a Molecular Trigger to Selectively Produce Alkanes or Z‐Alkenes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
One catalyst for two products: CO acts as a molecular trigger for adaptive alkyne hydrogenation using supported Pd nanoparticles. The catalyst reversibly switches between the formation of alkanes under H2 and Z‐alkenes under H2/CO for 37 structurally diverse alkynes.
