Levetiracetam in stiff-person syndrome
Journal of Neurology, 2008We studied the effects of oral levetiracetam (LEV) (500 mg twice daily) in three women with stiff-person syndrome in a single-blind, placebo-controlled study. The severity of muscle rigidity and of paroxysmal symptoms was assessed by EMG and clinically by a rating scale of 0-4 and by the Patients Global Impressions Scale. LEV was well tolerated.

Stiff-person syndrome or Moersch-Woltmann is a very rare and disabling neurologic disorder characterized by muscle rigidity and episodic spasms involving axial and limb musculature. It is an autoimmune disorder resulting in a malfunction of aminobutyric acid mediated inhibitory networks in the central nervous system.

The understanding of antibody-mediated neurologic diseases often emerges from a typical sequence of events. Initially, the symptoms and signs of the disorder are described along with the associated electrophysiologic findings, and clinical diagnostic criteria are established.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a neurological disorder characterized by fluctuating muscle rigidity and painful spasms that occur spontaneously or are triggered by diverse stimuli. Partial or segmental forms of the disorder, such as stiff-limb syndrome (SLS) and the more severe disease called progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus ...

Stiff person syndrome is an uncommon neurological disease characterised by symmetrical muscle stiffness and spasms that often lead to skeletal deformity. Variants of this syndrome include the ‘stiff leg syndrome’ in which only one limb is involved and ‘progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus’ in which we can find a variety of ...

This communication considers a patient with episodic muscle spasms. Pharmacological intervention and electrophysiological studies provided adequate evidence confirming the diagnosis of stiff person syndrome. Electrophysiological studies in present communication similar to earlier reports, confirmed once again the autonomous state of the anterior horn ...
