Arterial stiffness is an important determinant of pulse pressure, and of left ventricular load and coronary perfusion pressure.Precise quantification is elusive, since stiffness is different in different arteries and even in the same artery at different pressures.

Abstract Shoulder stiffness is commonly encountered in clinical practice but varies greatly in severity and etiology. Loss of shoulder range of motion can be a patient's primary complaint or may be a secondary finding. Possible causes of stiffness include guarding due to pain or secondary gain issues (nonanatomic), true mechanical ...

To the Editor:— Commenting on the remarks of Dr. Carl V. Granger, who replied to the note on "Morning 'stiffness,'" there is much to be said for his point of view. The numbness and stiffness occurring in the hands after a night's sleep may occur because of pressure from swelling on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. Such swelling

Stiff Guidewires in Endourology: What Is Stiffness?
Journal of Endourology, 2022Introduction: The aim of this study is to perform a literature review of stiff guidewires used in urology and to investigate if there is an official definition for stiffness (shaft rigidity) of wires. Materials and Methods: A ...

The author presents a way of refinement of traditional measures of stiffness for the initial value problem (*) \(y'(x)=f(x,y(x))\), \(x\in [a,b]\), y(a) is given, where \(y(x)\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\). The measure of stiffness introduced is more precise and easier to evaluate numerically.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, 2004
Shoulder stiffness is a common but poorly understood disorder of the glenohumeral joint. Many terms are used to describe a stiff shoulder, including frozen shoulder and adhesive capsulitis. This article reviews the terminology, classification, diagnostic options, and management options of shoulder stiffness.

The stiff finger is a frequently encountered entity in hand surgical practice. It stems from a myriad of causes, may have multiple components, and requires a variety of solutions. A true understanding of the ideal treatments for the stiff finger requires a basic understanding of the local milieu that arises from injury and the anatomic features that ...

Leg Stiffness and Quasi-Stiffness
2019Human locomotion is similar to the motion of a bouncing ball. Therefore, the term “bouncing gait” has been used to describe locomotion in which the lower limbs perform the role of “springs” responsible for the movement of the general centre of mass. “Spring-mass model” is used to describe a bouncing gait and contains a material point that represents a ...

Measurement of stiffness of Greek stiff soils
2011Research into the stress-strain behaviour of many stiff clays and weak rocks has demonstrated conclusively that it is highly nonlinear. Hence, to calculate ground movements it is necessary to define stiffness parameters at strains which correspond to the strains caused by the construction.
