Strain Gradients in Epitaxial Ferroelectrics [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review B 72, 020102R (2005), 2004
X-ray analysis of ferroelectric thin layers of Ba1/2Sr1/2TiO3 with different thickness reveals the presence of internal strain gradients across the film thickness and allows us to propose a functional form for the internal strain profile. We use this to calculate the direct influence of strain gradient, through flexoelectric coupling, on the ...

Axisymmetric flow of ideal fluid moving in a narrow domain: a study of the axisymmetric hydrostatic Euler equations

open access: yes, 2015
In this article we will introduce a new model to describe the leading order behavior of an ideal and axisymmetric fluid moving in a very narrow domain.

New design of electrostatic mirror actuators for application in high-precision interferometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We describe a new geometry for electrostatic actuators to be used in sensitive laser interferometers, suited for prototype and table top experiments related to gravitational wave detection with mirrors of 100 g or less.

A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

A case of Beauveria bassiana keratitis confirmed by internal transcribed spacer and LSU rDNA D1–D2 sequencing

open access: yesNew Microbes and New Infections, EarlyView., 2014
Abstract We describe a case of fungal keratitis due to Beauveria bassiana in a farmer with Fuchs' dystrophy, treated with amphotericin B. Surgery with penetrating keratoplasty was necessary to resolve the lesions. Susceptibility testing and molecular sequencing permitted the identification and treatment of this rare aetiological agent of invasive ...

Strain-assisted spin manipulating and the discerption of strain-induced spin splitting [PDF]

open access: yesEur. Phys. J. B 63, 493-500 (2008), 2007
We show that the efficiency of manipulating electron spin in semiconductor quantum wells can be enhanced by tuning the strain strength. The effect combining intrinsic and strain-induced spin splitting varies for different systems, which provides an alternative route to understand the experimental phenomena brought in by the strain.

Global Strong Solutions of the Boltzmann Equation without Angular Cut-off

open access: yes, 2010
We prove the existence and exponential decay of global in time strong solutions to the Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off, i.e., for long-range interactions.

Identification of functional and diverse circulating cancer‐associated fibroblasts in metastatic castration‐naïve prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote cancer growth, invasion (metastasis), and drug resistance. Here, we identified functional and diverse circulating CAFs (cCAFs) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). cCAFs were found in higher numbers and were functional and diverse in mPCa patients versus healthy individuals, suggesting their ...

Q fever outbreak in the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, Switzerland

open access: yesNew Microbes and New Infections, EarlyView., 2014
Abstract Coxiella burnetii infection (Q fever) is a widespread zoonosis with low endemicity in Switzerland, therefore no mandatory public report was required. A cluster of initially ten human cases of acute Q fever infections characterized by prolonged fever, asthenia and mild hepatitis occurred in 2012 in the terraced vineyard of Lavaux ...

Reversible strain effect on the magnetization of LaCoO3 films [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 79, 092409 (2009), 2008
The magnetization of ferromagnetic LaCoO3 films grown epitaxially on piezoelectric substrates has been found to systematically decrease with the reduction of tensile strain. The magnetization change induced by the reversible strain variation reveals an increase of the Co magnetic moment with tensile strain.
