Patterns in distribution and density of larval lampreys in the main‐stem Columbia River, Washington–Oregon

open access: yesNorth American Journal of Fisheries Management, Volume 43, Issue 6, Page 1458-1474, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Objective This study compiled data sets from multiple research efforts from 2010 to 2018 to describe patterns in the presence and density of larval lampreys in deep water habitats across 430 river kilometers of the lower and middle main‐stem Columbia River.

Bandleitfähigkeit im Hofstadter‐Schmetterling

open access: yesPhysik in unserer Zeit, Volume 54, Issue 5, Page 231-237, September 2023., 2023

Private Equity and Local Public Finances

open access: yesJournal of Accounting Research, Volume 61, Issue 4, Page 1313-1362, September 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT We study the economic impact of private equity (PE) investments on local governments, which are important corporate stakeholders. Examining over 11,000 deals and private firm data in Europe, we document that target firms' effective tax rates and total tax expenses decrease by 15% and 13% after PE deals.

Setting the stones to restore and monitor European flat oyster reefs in the German North Sea

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 33, Issue 7, Page 661-677, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Ecological restoration includes specific technical phases over the course of an ecosystem recovery process. In the marine environment and for oyster reef restoration, the installation and implementation of pilot reefs close the gap between feasibility studies with small‐scale experiments and designated upscaling for marine conservation ...

Depth‐limiting resistant layers restrict dimensions and positions of estuarine channels and bars

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 9, Issue 2, Page 213-232, April 2023., 2023
Future sea‐level rise is expected to significantly change channel dynamics in many estuaries that provide access to mainports and densely inhabited coastal areas. Here we show that channel dimensions strongly depend on the presence of resistant layers in the subsurface.

Paleo‐Hydrogeological Modeling to Understand Present‐Day Groundwater Salinities in a Low‐Lying Coastal Groundwater System (Northwestern Germany)

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 59, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Groundwater abstraction and drainage are considered to be the main drivers for the salinization of low‐lying coastal groundwater systems, while the role of past boundary conditions is less clear. In this study, 3‐D paleo‐hydrogeological variable‐density groundwater flow and salt transport modeling (“paleo‐modeling”) is applied to reconstruct ...

Stratigraphic and geotechnical characterization of regionally extensive and highly competent shallow sand units in the southern North Sea

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 52, Issue 1, Page 78-98, January 2023., 2023
A detailed stratigraphic and geotechnical investigation of the uppermost 50 m below the sea floor was carried out for parts of the German North Sea sector using combined information from shallow seismic reflection surveys, 50‐m‐long sediment cores and cone penetration tests covering an area of ~150 km2.

Island area and historical geomorphological dynamics shape multifaceted diversity of barrier island floras

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2022, Issue 8, August 2022., 2022
The influence of island dynamics and characteristics on taxonomic diversity, particularly species richness, are well studied. Yet, our knowledge on the influence of island dynamics and characteristics on other facets of diversity, namely functional and phylogenetic diversity, is limited, constraining our understanding of assembly processes on islands ...

Vegetation response to rapid climate change during the Lateglacial–Early Holocene transition at Gola di Lago, southern Switzerland

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 51, Issue 3, Page 606-620, July 2022., 2022
Predicting the effects of ongoing climate warming on vegetation requires a long‐term perspective of past ecosystem dynamics. We therefore analysed the sedimentary record from the mire Gola di Lago (985 m a.s.l.) in southern Switzerland, to better understand the vegetation response to past rapid climate change.

Can rolling composite wildflower blocks increase biodiversity in agricultural landscapes better than wildflowers strips?

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 5, Page 1172-1177, May 2022., 2022
Here I suggest a change of conservation practice changing from successional wildflower (WF) strips to composite WF blocks. By regular removal and replacement of aged WF strip either within the block (rotational) or at its margins (rolling), the habitat heterogeneity in composite WF block could be perpetuated.
