A structural basis for the strain‐dependent UDP‐sugar specificity of glycosyltransferase C from the Limosilactobacillus reuteri accessory secretion system

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, EarlyView.
X‐ray crystal structures of glycosyltransferase C from the Limosilactobacillus reuteri 100‐23 (LrGtfC100‐23) accessory secretion system were determined in its apo form and in complexes with UDP and with UDP‐N‐acetylglucosamine, which revealed candidate residues involved in strain‐specific recognition of UDP‐sugars.

PGN_0298 in the Assembly and Insertion Machinery (Aim) Operon Is Essential for the Viability of Porphyromonas gingivalis

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Porphyromonas gingivalis is a typical periodontal pathogen, and one of its key virulence factors is the powerful protease gingipains. Gingipains are secreted via the type IX secretion system (T9SS) and are associated with the assembly and insertion machinery (Aim) operon (PGN_0296 to PGN_0301), which encodes both T9SS components and non‐T9SS ...

Host Phylogeny and Feeding Habit Jointly Govern Mammalian Gut Microbiota Composition

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Herbivores showed higher alpha diversity than carnivores/omnivores, while omnivores had the highest beta diversity. Host phylogeny influenced gut microbiota more strongly in herbivores/omnivores, with phylogenetic distance correlating to microbiota dissimilarity.

Risk Factors for Bloodstream Infections in Critically Ill Children: Gram‐Negative Predominance and Complex Chronic Conditions

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim Bloodstream infections (BSIs) remain a significant cause of mortality in paediatric intensive care units (PICUs). This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with the aetiology and outcomes of hospital‐acquired BSIs. Methods This retrospective study analysed 422 blood cultures with pathogenic growth collected from patients ...

Repeat Intraocular Sampling and Microbiological Testing in Infectious Endophthalmitis: A 27‐Year Prospective Observational Study at an Australian Statewide Tertiary Referral Centre

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Ophthalmology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Endophthalmitis requiring multiple ocular tissue sampling for microbiological testing is uncommon and has not been previously studied. This study aims to analyse cases with at least two ocular tissue samplings and testing of different ocular samples against culture yields. Methods A 27‐year prospective observational study using data
