Indirect Detection of Swine Influenza Activity in Porcine Blood Using Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning

open access: yesJournal of Biophotonics, EarlyView.
Blood serum from healthy swine, unvaccinated or vaccinated against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and vaccinated swine infected with H1N1 and H1N2 variants of swine influenza was analyzed using Raman spectroscopy. Partial least squares discriminant analysis and eXtreme gradient boosting discriminant analysis of the acquired spectra ...

Streptococcus pneumoniae induces pyroptosis through the regulation of autophagy in murine microglia

open access: yesOncoTarget, 2015
Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for significant mortality and morbidity worldwide and causes invasive pneumococcal diseases including pneumococcal meningitis. Pyroptosis is caspase-1-dependent inflammatory cell death and is known to be induced by

Early detection of cerebrospinal fluid/serum glucose ratio: A promising value for mortality prognosis in patients with acute bacterial meningitis

open access: yesJournal of General and Family Medicine, EarlyView.
This study revealed that a glucometer‐based measurement significantly improved the turnaround time required for CSF/serum glucose ratio measurement compared to conventional laboratory tests, which could be considered a reliable aid to the mortality prognosis.

Evaluation of differences in S. pneumoniae colonization among children with and without clinically diagnosed asthma/wheeze [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Streptococcus pneumoniae colonization is the nasopharynx is common in young children. Colonization of S. pneumoniae is a necessary precursor for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children less ...

Monocytes regulate the mechanism of T-cell death by inducing Fas-mediated apoptosis during bacterial infection. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Monocytes and T-cells are critical to the host response to acute bacterial infection but monocytes are primarily viewed as amplifying the inflammatory signal.

A distinct sortase SrtB anchors and processes a streptococcal adhesin AbpA with a novel structural property. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Surface display of proteins by sortases in Gram-positive bacteria is crucial for bacterial fitness and virulence. We found a unique gene locus encoding an amylase-binding adhesin AbpA and a sortase B in oral streptococci.

Gramicidin and chlorhexidine encapsulated in bicontinuous microemulsions: Antimicrobial activity performance and their impact on self‐assembly

open access: yesJournal of Surfactants and Detergents, EarlyView.
Interaction of gramicidin D (gD) and chlorhexidine (CH) with the surfactant monolayers of bicontinuous microemulsions. Abstract The utility of bicontinuous microemulsions (BMEs) as carriers of the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gramicidin D and antiseptic chlorhexidine was investigated for possible topical delivery to chronic wounds.

Exploring the antimicrobial activity of fermented and non‐fermented cocoa bean shell extracts through metabolomics analysis and synergistic studies

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Cocoa bean shell (CBS) extracts have emerged as a promising source of antimicrobial compounds. However, the bioactive compounds responsible for their antimicrobial activity have not been studied sufficiently. This study analyzed the antimicrobial properties of 12 extracts from fermented and non‐fermented CBS, employing solvent and ...
