Numerical Analysis of Stress Gradient and Traps Effects on Carbon Diffusion in AISI 316L during Low Temperature Gas Phase Carburization

open access: yesMetals, 2018
In order to elucidate the roles of the composition-induced stress gradient and the traps formed by chromium atoms in carbon diffusion in AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel during low temperature gas phase carburization, the carbon concentration-depth ...

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

Heat shock proteins and the cellular response to osmotic stress [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
In antidiuresis, the intrarenal distribution of HSP25/27, alpha beta -crystallin, HSP72, OSP94 and HSP110 corresponds to the osmotic gradient between cortex and papilla: low amounts in the cortex and high values in the inner medulla and papilla.

Flow of a Second Grade Fluid through Constricted Tube using Integral Method

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2016
The steady flow of a second grade fluid through constricted tube for mild stenosis is modeled and analyzed theoretically. The governing equations are simplified by implying an order-of-magnitude analysis.

Free vibration analysis employing strain gradient notation four-node plane elements and considering the effects of parasitic shear

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Technology
In this work, plane stress free vibration is performed using four-node elements formulated using strain gradient notation. Accurate results are sought, and the effects of parasitic shear are investigated. By applying strain gradient notation, which is a

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning change along environmental stress gradients

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2012
AbstractPositive relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning has been observed in many studies, but how this relationship is affected by environmental stress is largely unknown. To explore this influence, we measured the biomass of microalgae grown in microcosms along two stress gradients, heat and salinity, and compared our results ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Shrub facilitation increases plant diversity along an arid scrubland-temperate rainforest boundary in South America [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Theoretical models predict nurse plant facilitation enhances species richness by ameliorating stressful environmental conditions and expanding distributional ranges of stress-intolerant species into harsh environments.

Implicit gradient and integral average effective stresses: relationships and numerical approximations

open access: yesFatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2014
AbstractThis paper investigates two possible definitions of a non‐local effective stress: the weighted average value and the implicit gradient solution. These definitions are usually applied for strength assessment, particularly in the high cycle fatigue regime, in the presence of notches, defects, cracks or welded joint toes or roots.
