Management of mitochondrial stroke‐like‐episodes
European Journal of Neurology, 2009Aim of this review is to discuss recent findings concerning the management of stroke‐like episodes (SLEs) in patients with mitochondrial disorders (MIDs). Various databases were searched for appropriate literature. SLEs are a dominant feature of MIDs and occur most frequently in MELAS‐syndrome, less frequently in MERRF‐syndrome, Kearns‐Sayre‐syndrome ...

The syndrome of mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a disease marked by a clinical triad of (1) stroke-like episode (SLE) before age 40 years, (2) encephalopathy characterized by seizures and dementia, and (3) lactic acidosis and ragged red fibers.

Platelet function in mitochondriopathy with stroke and stroke-like episodes
Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2004SummaryStroke and stroke-like episodes are frequent complications in mitochondriopathy, particulary in MELAS syndrome (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke like episodes) which is a disorder of the mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in diverse cell types.

Heat stroke-like episode in a child caused by zonisamide
Brain and Development, 1997A 2-year-old mentally retarded boy with frontal lobe epilepsy presented with an episode that resembled heat stroke during the administration of zonisamide. He developed hyperpyrexia with oligohidrosis and central neurological symptoms, including, chorea-like involuntary movements, resting tremor, and cogwheel rigidity.

Neuronal hyperexcitability in stroke-like episodes of MELAS syndrome
Neurology, 2002The pathogenesis of stroke-like episodes in patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) remains unknown.Fourteen stroke-like episodes in six patients with MELAS were studied using clinical, neuroradiologic, and electrophysiologic approaches.

Congenital Livedo Reticularis and Recurrent Stroke‐like Episodes
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1993SUMMARYThree children with pronounced livedo reticularis present since birth (cutis marmorata‐telangiectasia congenita) have been followed to the ages of eight, 17 and 21 years. During childhood they developed frequent recurrent transient stroke‐like hemipareses, affecting either side of the body, associated with ipsilateral pain, headache, visual ...

Mitochondrial metabolic stroke: Phenotype and genetics of stroke-like episodes
Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 2019Stroke-like episodes (SLEs) are the hallmark of mitochondrial encephalopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episode (MELAS) syndrome but rarely occur also in other specific or nonspecific mitochondrial disorders. Pathophysiologically, SLLs are most likely due to a regional disruption of the blood-brain barrier triggered by the underlying ...
