Structural valve deterioration in mitral replacement surgery: Comparison of carpentier-edwards supra-annular porcine and perimount pericardial bioprostheses [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Background: Bioprostheses preserved with glutaraldehyde, both porcine and pericardial, have been available as second-generation prostheses for valve replacement surgery.

Entropy‐Driven Design of Low‐Melting‐Point Alloys via Compositionally Complex Strategy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Conventional low‐melting‐point alloys (LMPAs) are limited by a narrow compositional space and inherent property trade‐offs. This review presents an entropy‐driven design strategy that overcomes these limitations, ushering in a new class of low‐melting‐point compositionally complex alloys (LMCCAs).

A case of freestyle valve reoperation 23 years after the first operation

open access: yesSAGE Open Medical Case Reports, 2022
We present a case of redo stentless valve operation in a 73-year-old man who underwent aortic valve replacement via the subcoronary approach with a freestyle aortic bioprosthesis 23 years ago at our institution.

Wearable Smart Patches on Sustainable Chitosan With Reversible Microbial Growth‐Inhibitory Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chitosan, a polysaccharide upcycled from biowaste, has long promised sustainable, biocompatible, and antimicrobial films and devices, an appeal reinforced by its recent regulatory recognition, with several chitosan‐based antibacterial dressings gaining clearance through the Food and Drug Administration's 510(k) pathway.

Ionic Precursors Transformed Into Vinyl Acetate Synthesis Catalyst via Reaction‐Driven Restructuring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that a simple physical mixture of Pd and Au ionic precursors, KOAc promoter, and SiO2 support can transform into a highly active vinyl acetate synthesis catalyst through reaction‐driven restructuring. The results highlight reaction‐induced restructuring as an innovative and sustainable catalyst design strategy.

An Integrated Oxygen‐Supplying Device and Predictive Multiphysics Model for Extended Ambient Transport of Insulin‐Producing Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cell therapies typically rely on cold‐chain logistics and cryopreservation, limiting access and compromising cell quality. Here, a dual‐chamber device separates an oxygen‐supplying chamber from a hyaluronic acid cargo chamber, sustaining oxygen delivery for over 70 h and enabling ambient‐temperature shipment.

Pregnancy and Bioprostheses

open access: yesObstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1995
The long-term performance of bioprostheses was evaluated in women 35 years of age or less to determine the influence of pregnancy on structural valve deterioration. Between 1972 and 1992, 237 female patients received 255 biological prostheses. Of the total operations, 53 were performed in patients who experienced pregnancy (P) and 202 in patients who ...

How is Nanoarchitectonics Shaping Extracellular Vesicle Research?

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The convergence of nanoarchitectonics and extracellular vesicle biology is reshaping next‐generation nanomedicine by enabling rationally designed nanostructures for enhanced EVs detection, engineering, and therapy. ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have gained recognition as crucial mediators of cell‐to‐cell communication, holding immense potential

Durability of porcine and pericardial prostheses in tricuspid valve replacementCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Open
Objective: Biologic valves dominate tricuspid valve replacement, yet data on different valve types are lacking. We compare the survival and durability of porcine and pericardial tricuspid prostheses.
