Endocrine studies in heroin addicts

Abstract In 10 heroin addicts actively taking the drug, 5 males, 5 females, a number of endocrine abnormalities were identified. These included especially: (1) Increased thyroid function manifested by high total T 4 (and occasionally T 3 ) and T 3 resin uptake, and by blunted TSH response to TRH.

1. Sixty infantry soldiers, 55 Negro and 5 white, were studied to determine the basis for their addiction to marihuana. 2. Case histories reveal a background of psychopathic development and behavior. 3. Eighty-five percent of these men were referred for psychiatric evaluation because of poor records as soldiers, and the remainder for neurosis.

A Study of the Sexuality of Opiate Addicts

The influence of heroin use on sexual behavior was studied in individuals attending a drug abuse program in Porto, Portugal. As we expected, drug abuse was found mainly to adversely affect sexual behavior. A minority of patients reported improvement in sexual behavior with heroin use.
