Genetic Bottleneck and Panmixia Following the Collapse of a Great Lakes Lake Whitefish Fishery

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 19, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis abundance has declined throughout most of the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America for two decades. Current management strategies in Lake Erie assume that there is a single stock of lake whitefish that spawns in the West Basin.

Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, Volume 9, Issue 5, September 2026.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...

Ultrastructure of Vitellogenic Ovarian Follicles and Morphogenesis of the Oocyte Envelope in the Eurasian Ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua Linnaeus 1758) (Teleostei, Perciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 9, September 2026.
Ruffe's vitellogenic ovarian follicles consists of a single oocyte surrounded by follicular cells, a basal lamina, and thecal cells. The oocytes are polarized and covered by a primary envelope. The follicular cells diversify into micropylar and mainbody cells. The latter have dark and bright cytoplasms.

ACE‐inhibitory peptide Leu‐Tyr‐Ala in skeletal muscle actin exhibits anti‐aging effects through the inhibition of acn‐1 in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 12, Page 7002-7014, September 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Inhibitors of angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) are used in pharmaceuticals and functional foods. Captopril, a well‐known ACE inhibitor, extends the lifespan of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Bioactive peptides derived from food sources are considered safe ACE inhibitors.
