Substance P equals pain substance?

Circumstantial evidence has led to the theory that substance P (SP) — an undecapeptide discovered over 60 years ago — is involved in the transmission of pain information from the central nervous system. More direct evidence is now provided by two studies of mice in which the function of SP has been genetically disrupted.

In 1962 in New York I presented a paper on a method of isolating substance P from bovine brain (Zuber, 1963). Subsequently, I managed to improve and expand this method a little further at CIBA. Unfortunately, however, it was possible to continue this work for only one year — until May 1963.
