Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Microscopic analysis of the chemical reaction between Fe(Te,Se) thin films and underlying CaF$_2$

open access: yes, 2012
To understand the chemical reaction at the interface of materials, we performed a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in four types of Fe(Te,Se) superconducting thin films prepared on different types of substrates: CaF2 substrate, CaF2 ...

Graphene on the C-terminated SiC (000 $\bar{1}$) surface: An ab initio study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The atomic and electronic structures of a graphene layer on top of the $(2\times2)$ reconstruction of the SiC (000$\bar{1}$) surface are studied from ab initio calculations. At variance with the (0001) face, no C bufferlayer is found here.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Spatial distribution of Gaussian fluctuations of the molecular field and magnetization in the pyramid-like Ising nanoscopic system interacting with the substrate

open access: yes, 2009
We study thermodynamic properties of an Ising model of a ferromagnetic nanoscopic pyramid deposited onto a ferromagnetic bulk substrate. The influence of the interaction between the pyramid and the substrate is calculated in terms of the equilibrium ...

Applying laboratory thermal desorption data in an interstellar context: sublimation of methanol thin films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Methods by which experimental measurements of thermal desorption can be applied in astrophysical environments have been developed, using the sublimation of solid methanol as an example.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The strong influence of substrate conductivity on droplet evaporation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We report the results of physical experiments that demonstrate the strong influence of the thermal conductivity of the substrate on the evaporation of a pinned droplet.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The influence of concrete substrate moisture condition on the tensile pull-off strength of protective coatings

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
A range of different surface coatings are available for the protection of concrete surfaces, typically aimed at reducing the ingress of deleterious substances into the concrete and providing adequate aesthetic appeal on patch-repaired elements.
