Stroke Repair via Biomimicry of the Subventricular Zone
Stroke is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, 85% of which are ischemic. Current stroke therapies are limited by a narrow effective therapeutic time and fail to effectively complete the recovery of the damaged area.

Modeling cerebral palsy in animals
Abstract Advancements in the treatment of cerebral palsy depend on animal research. Yet, most animal models have not been fully evaluated for spasticity and dystonia using clinically relevant measures of altered tone or movement patterns, which form the basis for diagnosing people with the condition.

On the subventricular zone origin of human glioblastoma
The cancer stem cell theory posits that a small subset of cancer cells with self-renewing capacity, popularly known as cancer stem cells and experimentally defined as tumor-initiating cells, maintains the tumor with its heterogeneous lineages of cancer cells (1,2).

Chi3l3 induces oligodendrogenesis in an experimental model of autoimmune neuroinflammation
Chitinase 3-like-3 (Chi3l3) is expressed in microglia, but its function is not clear. Here the authors show that Chi3l3 is expressed in the subventricular zone in mouse experimental immune encephalitis, which induces oligodendrogenesis.

Perlecan is required for FGF-2 signaling in the neural stem cell niche
In the adult subventricular zone (neurogenic niche), neural stem cells double-positive for two markers of subsets of neural stem cells in the adult central nervous system, glial fibrillary acidic protein and CD133, lie in proximity to fractones and to ...

Ethanol exposure alters brain endothelial cell function and blood–brain barrier integrity. In human brain microcapillary endothelial cells (HBMEC) and mouse brain endothelial cells (MBEC) from a prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) model, ethanol increased DNA methyltransferas‐1 (DNMT1) activity and reduced DNA methylation, affecting DNMT3a/3b, methyl‐CpG ...

Therapeutic hypothermia is a potent tool in the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, authors demonstrate how the RNA-binding motif protein RBM3, which is induced by mild cooling while ...

The generation of human cortical organoids containing outer radial glia (oRG) cells is crucial for modeling neocortical development. Here we show that Catalpol, an iridoid glucoside derived from Rehmannia glutinosa, significantly enhances the generation ...

Activation of subventricular zone stem cells after neuronal injury
The mammalian subventricular zone (SVZ) has garnered a tremendous amount of attention as a potential source of replacement cells for neuronal injury. This zone is highly neurogenic, harbours stem cells and supports long-distance migration. The general pattern of activation includes increased proliferation, neurogenesis and emigration towards the injury.

What do we know about adult mammalian hippocampal neurogenesis so far? [PDF]
It is known that the adult mammalian brain can add new neurons throughout the whole lifespan. Neural stem cells reside in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the rostral lateral ventricle.
