Abstract In the summer of 1919, W. T. Goode, the Manchester Guardian’s special correspondent in Russia and the Baltic, was arrested in the Estonian capital Tallinn and briefly detained aboard a British warship. Goode's detention caused a furore, leading to accusations of kidnap, heated commentary in the press and questions in parliament.

ASIC Implementation Comparison of SIC and LSD Receivers for MIMO-OFDM [PDF]
MIMO-OFDM receivers with horizontal encoding are considered in this paper. The successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm is compared to the K-best list sphere detector (LSD). A modification to the K-best LSD algorithm is introduced.

Sanctions, National Security, and Free Speech
ABSTRACT A fundamental, but largely overlooked, aspect of the New Washington Consensus is the use of national security arguments to restrict speech and punish disfavored speakers. Although the United States has a longer history of using sanctions to restrict speech in the terrorism context, it has recently applied sanctions to restrict political speech,

Frameless ALOHA with Reliability-Latency Guarantees [PDF]
One of the novelties brought by 5G is that wireless system design has increasingly turned its focus on guaranteeing reliability and latency. This shifts the design objective of random access protocols from throughput optimization towards constraints ...

National identity after conquest
Abstract Conquering powers routinely adopt state‐directed nationalization projects that seek to make the boundaries of the nation coterminous with the (newly expanded) boundaries of the state. To this end, they implement policies that elevate the economic status of individuals who embrace the occupier's national identity and discriminate against those ...

CSMA-SIC: Carrier Sensing with Successive Interference Cancellation
Successive interference cancellation (SIC) is a physical layer technique that enables the decoders to decode multiple simultaneously transmitted signals. The complicated model of SIC requires careful design of the MAC protocol and accurate adjustment of transmission parameters.

A Novel Opportunistic NOMA in Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point Networks [PDF]
The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is regarded as a promising multiple access technique for 5G networks. In this research, we consider the joint transmission (JT) NOMA for a Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) system, and propose anovel opportunistic ...

Mapping Disjuncture: Internationalism and Palestine
Short Abstract This paper reflects on a ‘Map Conversation’ session at the 2024 RGS‐IBG Annual Conference, that explored maps of the League of Nations and Palestine. The authors contrast maps promoting global consciousness in the 1920s with those charting colonial encroachment in Palestine.
