On Weighted Multivariate Sign Functions

open access: yes, 2020
Multivariate sign functions are often used for robust estimation and inference. We propose using data dependent weights in association with such functions.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Optimal control theory for a unitary operation under dissipative evolution

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2014
We show that optimizing a quantum gate for an open quantum system requires the time evolution of only three states irrespective of the dimension of Hilbert space. This represents a significant reduction in computational resources compared to the complete

Dual targeting of RET and SRC synergizes in RET fusion‐positive cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Despite the strong activity of selective RET tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), resistance of RET fusion‐positive (RET+) lung cancer and thyroid cancer frequently occurs and is mainly driven by RET‐independent bypass mechanisms. Son et al. show that SRC TKIs significantly inhibit PAK and AKT survival signaling and enhance the efficacy of RET TKIs in ...

Sufficient Covariate, Propensity Variable and Doubly Robust Estimation

open access: yes, 2015
Statistical causal inference from observational studies often requires adjustment for a possibly multi-dimensional variable, where dimension reduction is crucial.

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Adaptive Reduction of Curse of Dimensionality in Nonparametric Instrumental Variable Estimation

open access: yesMathematics
Nonparametric estimation of instrumental variable treatment effects typically builds on various nonparametric identification results. However, these estimators often face challenges from the curse of dimensionality in practice, as multi-dimensional ...

Next-to-leading order gravitational spin1-spin2 coupling with Kaluza-Klein reduction

open access: yes, 2010
We use the recently proposed Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction over the time dimension, within an effective field theory (EFT) approach, to calculate the next to leading order (NLO) gravitational spin1-spin2 interaction between two spinning compact objects. It

ATF4‐mediated stress response as a therapeutic vulnerability in chordoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We screened 5 chordoma cell lines against 100+ inhibitors of epigenetic and metabolic pathways and kinases and identified halofuginone, a tRNA synthetase inhibitor. Mechanistically halofuginone induces an integrated stress response, with eIF2alpha phosphorylation, activation of ATF4 and its target genes CHOP, ASNS, INHBE leading to cell death ...

Integrated multidimensional analysis is required for accurate prognostic biomarkers in colorectal cancer.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
CRC cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in Western countries. In order to develop prognostic biomarkers for CRC (colorectal cancer) aggressiveness, we analyzed retrospectively 267 CRC patients via a novel, multidimensional biomarker platform.
