Metabolism of sugars and physical performance

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1995
Physical activity in the form of exercise requires the metabolism of bodily fuel reserves to provide energy for muscle contraction. Under normal circumstances, very little protein is metabolized to provide the energy for muscle contraction. At rest and at low exercise intensities, the metabolism of fat provides a considerable proportion of the energy ...

Metabolism of the Sugar Alcohols and Their Derivatives

1945
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the metabolism of the sugar alcohols that emphasis mainly on the isomeric hexitols. Substances such as methyl alcohol and ethylene glycol are studied under categories other than the sugar alcohols. The sugar alcohol refers to the hexahydric alcohols and their availability as food in the human diet warrants ...

The Metabolism of Sugars and Starches

1989
The dietary carbohydrates, whether ingested as pre-formed sugars or as starches, enter the body proper almost exclusively as their constituent monosaccharides. In the case of starches, including “animal starch” or glycogen, this is always, and exclusively, as glucose. The sugars are more variable in the composition.

Effect of drought stress on sugar metabolism in leaves and roots of soybean seedlings.

Plant physiology and biochemistry : PPB, 2019
Sucrose is the main photosynthetic product in plants, and acts as a major energy substrate and signaling regulator of plant growth. Furthermore, sucrose is involved in the responses to various abiotic stresses.

Exogenous supplementation of melatonin alters representative organic acids and enzymes of respiratory cycle as well as sugar metabolism during arsenic stress in two contrasting indica rice cultivars.

Journal of Biotechnology, 2020
The objective of the present investigation was to understand the impact of exogenously applied melatonin on mitochondrial respiration and sugar metabolism in two contrasting rice cultivars, viz., Khitish (arsenic-susceptible) and Muktashri (arsenic ...

Girled-induced anthocyanin accumulation in red-leafed Prunus cerasifera: Effect on photosynthesis, photoprotection and sugar metabolism.

Plant Science, 2020
The feedback regulation of photosynthesis depends on the cooperation of multiple signals, including sugars. Herein, the effect of shoot girdling was monitored on a daily basis for three days in green- and red-leafed Prunus cerasifera plants (GLP and RLP,

Studies on growth and metabolism of Oenococcus oeni on sugars and sugar mixtures

Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2005
To study the effect of sugars and sugar mixtures on the growth kinetics of Oenococcus oeni NCIMB 11648 in batch culture with the aim of producing a high cell productivity system for starter cultures. The growth of O. oeni was investigated on single sugars (glucose, fructose or sucrose) and their mixtures (glucose-fructose, glucose-sucrose or fructose ...

Metabolic engineering for bioproduction of sugar alcohols

Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2008
Sugar alcohols find applications in pharmaceuticals, oral and personal care products, and as intermediates in chemical synthesis. While industrial-scale production of these compounds has generally involved catalytic hydrogenation of sugars, microbial-based processes receive increasing attention.

Sugar Transport and Metabolism in Schistosoma mansoni

The Journal of Parasitology, 1975
The absorption kinetics of some 14-C-labeled simple sugards in adults of Schistosoma mansoni are described. The influx of fructose and 3-0-methylglucose was by diffusion alone, while glucose, 2-deoxyglucose (2DOG), galactose, glucosamine, and mannose were absorbed by mediated transport as well as by diffusion.
