Sugar metabolism in the crystalline lens
Survey of Ophthalmology, 1978Research on the sugar metabolism of the crystalline lens, past and preent, is reviewed. The chief energy source in the lens is the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; respiration and oxidative phosphorylation become more important as the lens ages. The function of the alpha-glycerophosphate cycle is not fully understood.

Amino sugar metabolism in erythrocytes
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1968Abstract The ability of rabbit erythrocytes to synthesize glucosamine and convert it to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) has been measured in mature erythrocytes, in reticulocytes, and in the immature bone marrow erythroid cells. The cells were incubated with either [14C]fructose which can be converted via fructose 6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) to ...

Digestion and metabolism of sugars
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1995Many factors potentially influence the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the various species of sugars occurring in the human diet. Experimental evidence indicates that the source of sugars in foods does not in itself affect the rate of absorption or the metabolism of the sugars.

Previous research on cadmium (Cd) focused on toxicity, neglecting hormesis and its mechanisms. In this study, pakchoi seedlings exposed to varying soil Cd concentrations (CK, 5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg) showed an inverted U-shaped growth trend (hormesis ...

Sugar Metabolism and Compartmentation
Australian Journal of Plant Physiology, 1991A brief general picture of areas of current interest in the field of sugar metabolism and compartmentation in higher plants is presented. The control of partitioning of carbohydrate between sucrose and starch in leaves (source), the breakdown and utilisation of sucrose in sinks, and the storage of sugars and starch in sinks is described.
