Mitochondrial dysfunction-driven AMPK-p53 axis activation underpins the anti-hepatocellular carcinoma effects of sulfane sulfur. [PDF]

open access: goldSci Rep
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most prevalent form of primary liver cancer, notoriously refractory to conventional chemotherapy. Historically, sulfane sulfur-based compounds have been explored for the treatment of HCC, but their efficacy has been ...

2H-Thiopyran-2-thione sulfine, a compound for converting H2S to HSOH/H2S2 and increasing intracellular sulfane sulfur levels. [PDF]

open access: goldNat Commun
Reactive sulfane sulfur species such as persulfides (RSSH) and H2S2 are important redox regulators and closely linked to H2S signaling. However, the study of these species is still challenging due to their instability, high reactivity, and the lack of ...

Growth inhibitory factor/metallothionein-3 is a sulfane sulfur-binding protein

open access: bronze, 2023
Abstract Cysteine-bound sulfane sulfur atoms in proteins have received much attention as key factors in cellular redox homeostasis. However, the role of sulfane sulfur in zinc regulation has been underinvestigated. We report here that cysteine-bound sulfane sulfur atoms serve as ligands to hold and release zinc ions in growth inhibitory factor (GIF ...

NO Generation from Nitrite at Zinc(II): Role of Thiol Persulfidation in the Presence of Sulfane Sulfur. [PDF]

open access: yesACS Org Inorg Au, 2023
Nitrite-to-NO transformation is of prime importance due to its relevance in mammalian physiology. Although such a one-electron reductive transformation at various redox-active metal sites (e.g., Cu and Fe) has been illustrated previously, the reaction at the [ZnII] site in the presence of a sacrificial reductant like thiol has been reported to be ...

The multifaceted roles of sulfane sulfur species in cancer-associated processes

open access: bronzeBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 2020
Sulfane sulfur species comprise a variety of biologically relevant hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-derived species, including per- and poly-sulfidated low molecular weight compounds and proteins. A growing body of evidence suggests that H2S, currently recognized as a key signaling molecule in human physiology and pathophysiology, plays an important role in ...

New fluorescent probes for sulfane sulfurs and the application in bioimaging [PDF]

open access: greenChemical Science, 2013
A sulfane sulfur mediated benzodithiolone formation was developed. Based on this reaction, two fluorescent probes (SSP1 and SSP2) for the detection of sulfane sulfur species (persulfide, polysulfide, and elemental sulfur) were prepared and evaluated. The probes showed high selectivity and sensitivity to sulfane sulfurs.

Structural Basis for the Oxidation of Protein-bound Sulfur by the Sulfur Cycle Molybdohemo-Enzyme Sulfane Dehydrogenase SoxCD [PDF]

open access: hybridJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2010
The sulfur cycle enzyme sulfane dehydrogenase SoxCD is an essential component of the sulfur oxidation (Sox) enzyme system of Paracoccus pantotrophus. SoxCD catalyzes a six-electron oxidation reaction within the Sox cycle. SoxCD is an α(2)β(2) heterotetrameric complex of the molybdenum cofactor-containing SoxC protein and the diheme c-type cytochrome ...

Total sulfane sulfur bioavailability reflects ethnic and gender disparities in cardiovascular disease. [PDF]

open access: yesRedox Biol, 2018
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has emerged as an important physiological and pathophysiological signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system influencing vascular tone, cytoprotective responses, redox reactions, vascular adaptation, and mitochondrial respiration.

Optimization of a Method for Detecting Intracellular Sulfane Sulfur Levels and Evaluation of Reagents That Affect the Levels in Escherichia coli. [PDF]

open access: yesAntioxidants (Basel), 2022
Sulfane sulfur is a class of compounds containing zero-valent sulfur. Most sulfane sulfur compounds are reactive and play important signaling roles. Key enzymes involved in the production and metabolism of sulfane sulfur have been characterized; however,
