Immunostimulating effects of a sulfated galactan from Codium fragile

Carbohydrate Research, 2010
A pyruvylated sulfated galactan from Codium fragile is a highly ramified polysaccharide consisting of 3-linked, 3,6-linked, and non-reducing terminal d-galactose with pyruvate and sulfate groups; the glycan exerts anti-herpes simplex virus type 2 effects in vitro and in vivo.

Isolation of Sulfated Galactan from Codium fragile and Its Antiviral Effect

open access: yesBiological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 2009
A sulfated galactan (FG) was isolated from the green alga, Codium fragile. Chemical analysis revealed that FG mainly consisted of D-galactose with pyruvic acid (12.3%) and sulfate (11.0%). Methylation and NMR analyses showed that FG was composed of -->3)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->, beta-D-Galp-(1--> and -->3,6)-beta-D-Galp-(1--> residue.

A precipitation reaction between certain human G immunoglobulins and sulfated galactans

Immunochemistry, 1971
Abstract During electrophoresis, some pathological sera are seen to precipitate spontaneously in an agar gel and not in an agarose gel. Such sera come from G myelomas or malignant lymphomatosis cases. A similar precipitation is observed when either agaropectin or other sulfated galactans (but not other sulfated polysaccharides) are added to the same ...

Immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of porphyran, a sulfated galactan

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2023
Seaweeds are high in bioactive chemicals frequently used to treat human illnesses. Porphyran is a polysaccharide found in the red seaweeds of the genus Porphyra. Porphyran has been discovered to have immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory activity, and anti-cancer effects via boosting immunity and targeting important apoptotic molecules, making them ...

Galactan sulfate of Grateloupia indica: Isolation, structural features and antiviral activity

Phytochemistry, 2007
Natural compounds offer interesting pharmacological perspectives for antiviral drug development with regard to broad-spectrum antiviral properties and novel modes of action. In this study, we have analyzed polysaccharide fractions isolated from Grateloupia indica.

Conformation of sulfated galactan and sulfated fucan in aqueous solutions: Implications to their anticoagulant activities

Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling, 2007
The discovery of sulfated galactans and sulfated fucans in marine invertebrates with simple and ordered structures opened new perspectives to investigate the biological activity of these molecules and to determine whether different structures confer high affinity for a particular protein. We undertook a conformational analysis of a 2-sulfated, 3-linked

A new sulfated β-galactan from clams with anti-HIV activity

Carbohydrate Research, 1999
A new polysaccharide composed of galactan sulfate with a beta-(1-->3)-glycosidic linkage has been isolated from the marine clam species Meretrix petechialis. The polysaccharide was homogeneous in its composition containing D-galactose. The glycosidic linkage was examined by 2D DQF-COSY and 2D NOESY spectroscopy. The coupling constant of anomeric proton
