Rationales for the Choice of Metals for Super‐Reduced Biological Metal Centers: Cobalt in Cobalamin Versus Nickel in F430

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
DFT calculations on porphyrin, corrin, and corphin complexes of cobalt, rhodium, iron, manganese, or nickel, and QM/MM calculations on enzyme models, explore the factors controlling the availably of super‐reduced metal(I) states. True metal(I) states are seen in corrin only for cobalt, in corphin only for nickel, and not at all in porphyrin.

One‐Shot Pd(II)‐Catalyzed Multiple C–H Activation Enables Modular Construction of Fluorenylidene Oxindole‐Based Multi(Polycyclic) Aromatic Enes

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
A one‐shot Pd(II)‐catalyzed C─H activation strategy enables the rapid conversion of simple linear propiolamides into structurally diverse mono‐, di‐, and tri‐olefin‐bridged MPAEs. This cascade process orchestrates up to six sequential C–H activations in a single operation, providing streamlined access to highly conjugated architectures.

Stable sulfur isotopes identify habitat-specific foraging and mercury exposure in a highly mobile fish community

open access: yes, 2017
Tracking the uptake and transfer of toxic chemicals, such as mercury (Hg), in aquatic systems is challenging when many top predators are highly mobile and may therefore be exposed to chemicals in areas other than their location of capture, confounding ...

Nitrooxylation in Organic Synthesis: From Classical Nitrate Ester Formation to Modern Catalytic Strategies

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Nitrooxylation—the installation of nitrate esters (–ONO2) has evolved from classical mixed‐acid protocols to catalytic and mechano‐, flow‐, photo‐, and electrochemical strategies. This review delineates ionic and radical manifolds for C–ONO2 bond formation, emphasizing mechanistic control, selected substrate scope, and selectivity.

Methylmercury dietary pathways and bioaccumulation in Arctic benthic invertebrates of the Beaufort Sea

open access: yesArctic Science
This study investigated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in Arctic benthic invertebrates from two shelf sites in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isotopes and fatty acids were measured to examine diet influences on MeHg ...

Microbiological fractionation of stable sulfur isotopes: A review and critique

open access: yes, 1979
Microbiological transformations of sulfur compounds discriminate to various degrees between the stable sulfur isotopes 32S and 34S. Comparatively little is known on isotopic effects associated with sulfur‐oxidizing organisms, and the interpretation of ...

Locking Fe Single Atoms Into the Lattices of Mesoporous TiO2 Promotes Nitrogen Reduction

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
S‐coordinated Fe single‐atom catalysts on mesoporous TiO2 have been constructed by a universal lattice‐confined strategy. This catalyst shows a unique nanoconfinement effect for mass transfer and maximizes the active sites to mimic nitrogenase for ambient electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction.
