Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Random graph models for wireless communication networks

open access: yes, 2010
PhDThis thesis concerns mathematical models of wireless communication networks, in particular ad-hoc networks and 802:11 WLANs. In ad-hoc mode each of these devices may function as a sender, a relay or a receiver.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Uniform distribution and sum modulo m of independent random variables

open access: yes
If one of two independent random variables (possibly both) is uniformly distributed, then so is their sum modulo m; we show that the converse is true if m is a prime number and the relevant probabilities are rational numbers.Modulo m sum modulo m sum ...

Distributions of sum, difference, product and quotient of independent noncentral beta type 3 variables

open access: yes, 2013
: Let X and Y be independent random variables, X having a gamma distribution with shape parameter a and Y having a non-central gamma distribution with shape and non-centrality parameters b and δ, respectively. Define Z = X/(X + 2Y ).

Development of human monoclonal antibodies against TARM1 by yeast display

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human monoclonal antibodies against TARM1 are generated by yeast display‐guided selection. These antibodies bind to soluble and cell‐surface forms of TARM1. Also, these antibodies exhibit agonistic activity in the NFAT‐GFP reporter assay, indicating that TARM1 signaling can be functionally modulated by antibodies and suggesting TARM1 as a potential ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Cumulants of the nonlinear combination of independent random variables

open access: yes, 1991
A random variable of interest is often the sum of linear or nonlinear combinations of many independent random variables. In calculating the statistics of this random sum, advantages of simplicity and computational efficiency can be obtained by operating ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...
