Optical characteristics of supercontinuum generation

Experimental evidence is presented that the supercontinuum generated in H2O or D2O is a surface phenomenon whose origin is at the surface of self-trapped filaments. This is done by a comparison of the output patterns produced by spherical and cylindrical focusing lenses as well as comparison of the polarization of the incident and emitted light.

Supercontinuum Generation in Gases

This paper describes the first observation of supercontinua from gaseous media. The supercontinuum was generated at pressures as low as 1 atm from Xe and with input power as low as 5 µJ in 40 atm Xe and 25 µJ in 40 atm CO2. Continua were produced in the rare gases, Ar, Kr and Xe and molecular gases, H2, CO2 and N2.

Supercontinuum generation in tapered fibers

Supercontinuum light with a spectrum more than two octaves broad (370-1545 nm at the 20-dB level) was generated in a standard telecommunications fiber by femtosecond pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser. The fiber had been tapered to a diameter of :2mum over a 90-mm length. The pulse energy was 3.9 nJ (average power, 300 mW).

Towards a thermodynamic description of supercontinuum generation

We consider the incoherent nonlinear regime of the supercontinuum generation process in optical fibers. We show that, under certain conditions, the phenomenon of spectral broadening inherent to the supercontinuum generation may be described by simple thermodynamic arguments based on the kinetic wave theory.

In-amplifier mid-infrared supercontinuum generation

Mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) generation from 2.6 to 4.1 μm is demonstrated in a single-mode erbium-doped fluoride glass fiber amplifier pumped at 976 nm and seeded by an optical parametric generation (OPG) source emitting 400 ps pulses at 2.75 μm. Up to 82% of the SC power is generated beyond 3 μm.
