The Ventral Tectal Longitudinal Column: A Midbrain Nucleus for Modulation of Auditory Processing in the Cochlear Nucleus, Superior Olivary Complex, and Inferior Colliculus. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Comp Neurol
The ventral tectal longitudinal column (TLCv) is a midbrain nucleus thought to provide multisensory modulation of acoustic processing via descending projections to the superior olivary complex. We discovered additional projections from the TLCv to the cochlear nucleus and to the inferior colliculus.

Prenatal VPA exposure and changes in sensory processing by the superior colliculus

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2011
Disorders involving dysfunctional sensory processing are characterized by an inability to filter sensory information, particularly simultaneously arriving multimodal inputs. We examined the effects of prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a teratogen

Microvascular imaging of the unstained human superior colliculus using synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast microtomography

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Characterizing the microvasculature of the human brain is critical to advance understanding of brain vascular function. Most methods rely on tissue staining and microscopy in two-dimensions, which pose several challenges to visualize the three ...

Electrical stimulation of the superior colliculus induces non- topographically organized perturbation of reaching movements in cats

open access: yesFrontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 2015
Besides its well-known contribution to orienting behaviors, the superior colliculus (SC) might also play a role in controlling visually-guided reaching movements.

Did you choose appropriate tracer for retrograde tracing of retinal ganglion cells? The differences between cholera toxin subunit B and Fluorogold. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) and Fluorogold(FG) are two widely utilized retrograde tracers to assess the number and function of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).

The involvement of the superior colliculi in hemispherectomized subjects with blindsight

open access: yesJournal of Vision, 2010
Purpose: The ability in cortically blind patients to respond to visual stimuli without consciously experiencing has been termed ‘blindsight’. The goal of this study is to investigate the involvement of the superior colliculi (SC) in mediating blindsight in hemispherectomized (HS) subjects. Methods: We used the achromatic properties of collicular cells,

Anterograde transport blockade precedes deficits in retrograde transport in the visual projection of the DBA/2J mouse model of glaucoma

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2014
Axonal transport deficits have been reported as an early pathology in several neurodegenerative disorders, including glaucoma. However, the progression and mechanisms of these deficits are poorly understood.

Effects of damage to superior colliculi and pre-tectum on movement discrimination in rhesus monkeys [PDF]

open access: yesExperimental Brain Research, 1984
Eight rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were trained to detect an instantaneous lateral displacement of a small spot of light. The smallest movement for 79% correct performance was then determined. Severing the splenium of the corpus callosum, which has to be done to reveal the superior colliculi, had no effect on the movement threshold.

The segregation of Calb1, Calb2, and Prph neurons reveals distinct and mixed neuronal populations and projections to hair cells in the inner ear and central nuclei

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Three populations of hair cells have a distinct expression of Calb1 and Calb2. (A, A′D) The central is highly positive for Calb1 while surrounding HC are positive for Calb2. Later, a calyx forms primarily with Calb1. (B, B′, D′, D″) Saccule and utricle start out positive for Calb2 but will upregulate the Calb1 in the striola that is primarily forming ...

Hydrocephalus caused by conditional ablation of the Pten or beta-catenin gene

open access: yesCerebrospinal Fluid Research, 2008
To investigate the roles of Pten and β-Catenin in the midbrain, either the Pten gene or the β-catenin gene was conditionally ablated, using Dmbx1 (diencephalon/mesencephalon-expressed brain homeobox gene 1)-Cre mice.
