Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

A randomized trial of selenium supplementation and risk of type-2 diabetes, as assessed by plasma adiponectin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Evidence that selenium affects the risk of type-2 diabetes is conflicting, with observational studies and a few randomized trials showing both lower and higher risk linked to the level of selenium intake and status. We investigated the effect

Anaemia among school children of different socioeconomical status in a city of Southern Brazil

open access: yesAnnals of Human Biology
Background: Iron deficiency is one of the leading causes of anaemia, with those most affected being children and women of childbearing age, in Brazil there is a scarcity of studies involving the local prevalence of anaemia.

Effects and safety of periconceptional oral folate supplementation for preventing birth defects.

open access: yesCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2015
BACKGROUND It has been reported that neural tube defects (NTD) can be prevented with periconceptional folic acid supplementation. The effects of different doses, forms and schemes of folate supplementation for the prevention of other birth defects and ...

Introduction to the Supplement

open access: yesMuscle & Nerve
ABSTRACT Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease with marked phenotypic and clinical heterogeneity. Three active pharmaceutical agents are currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ALS: riluzole, edaravone (including intravenous [IV] and oral suspension ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

The effects of 5 days β-alanine supplementation on the velocity and the percentage o2max at the lactate threshold [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Purpose: To assess the effect of 5 days β-alanine supplementation on the velocity and the percentage of O2max ¬¬ (%O2max) at the lactate threshold (Tlac) during treadmill running.

Prenatal Vitamin D supplementation and child respiratory health: a randomised controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background Observational studies suggest high prenatal vitamin D intake may be associated with reduced childhood wheezing. We examined the effect of prenatal vitamin D on childhood wheezing in an interventional study.

Circulating Glutathione Peroxidase-3 in Elderly—Association with Renal Function, Cardiovascular Mortality, and Impact of Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation

open access: yesAntioxidants
Low-selenium status was associated with impaired renal function, which improved after selenium and coenzyme Q10 supplementation in an RCT. Here, we evaluated serum glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPx3) and its relation to serum selenium, selenoprotein P ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.
